Best of Tron Legacy [moviepack]

Post by h3xx »

The different parts of this moviepack were borrowed from various other
moviepacks and combined to create a "best of" moviepack that incorporates the
best-looking Tron: Legacy experience IMHO.

Here are the sources of the various parts:
  • Bike parts (bike.png, cycle.ase, shadow.png),
  • Floor pattern (floor.png),
  • Rim walls (rim_wall*.png):
    • Original. Traced from a screenshot of Tron Legacy taken during the
lightcycle battle scene and modified in The Gimp.
My thanks go out to all the moviepack designers who have contributed to this
project.

EDIT

There had been an overwhelming knee-jerk response to my inclusion of a copyright statement (though "copyLEFT" would be more accurate) and though I tried to explain to the best of my abilities my reasoning behind including such a statement it seems that some of the community are not convinced of my intentions. That is why I am outlining them here so that even the most illiterate trolls can have a handy list to refer to when posting replies to this forum topic.

1. I do not intend to sell, or allow to be sold any part of this compilation. This collection will remain free to all... forever.

2. I wish to respect the work that others have put into designing the models and textures that went into this compilation. This includes respecting their right to not have their work included in this compilation if they should choose to re-license their work to a more restrictive license.

3. I want to be specific. I can see bad things happening when I post my own work on the Internet, which includes some private corporation getting ahold of it, claiming copyright and selling it for profit at my expense. The inclusion of this copyright statement and Creative Commons license is to safeguard against that.

Please keep these three points in mind when formulating your replies.

You're really going to claim copyright on taking a bunch of other people's textures and putting them in a folder?

I made the rim wall from scratch, put in the time and effort to selecting the various parts, testing them together and tweaking the settings for this moviepack, so I believe I have at least some right to claim copyright.

The Creative Commons license guarantees that the work is always going to be free (as in beer as well as speech), and by giving the authors of the various parts the credit where it is due, it preserves their claim to the work.

One of the things I noticed about the moviepacks available in these forums is that many of them are ad-hoc, incomplete and badly-organized. The purpose of this moviepack is to combine the best elements of a range of them in a coherent manner, and at the same time honoring the creators of the parts.

In conclusion, I meant no disrespect, nor did I mean to imply that I claim ownership to the parts I did not create, but if nobody claims copyright, then anyone can come along and claim it's theirs.

A copyright notice is not required, but it's a good idea to include one. Even if you include a notice, it doesn't prohibit someone from claiming it's their work.

Aside, I don't foresee anyone being litigious over an Armagetron moviepack. I know some people got upset when their moviepacks were included in a fork of the game without their permission, but they were able to resolve the issue. I could see it being an issue if someone started selling the game with additional moviepacks…

Reminds me of that guy in our class who had to write under every sheet of paper he got that it was his property, his work and his paper.

(even if it wasn't).

He changed the school when it was foreseeable that he would fail his exams.

And regardless if you claim copyright or not, it's not your work. Someone else could have assembled these textures in one minute and "created" the rim wall in two. Many players here know how the settings work so that's not difficult either...just don't think (and say) what you did is in any way special, creative or original and you deserve a lot of credit for that.

Some of them are tentative drafts, or just 3d models, a new floor texture etc., but were meant to let people compose their own mps (which is what you did, except that you're making a big fuss about it).
You have to dig a bit in old posts to find complete moviepacks. Or you search here and here.

I was thinking that this is basically in the same category as "fan art"—but with this being fan art on top of fan art.

Possibly (see below), but to the whole assemblage?

True enough. That's why I question putting your copyright over the entire thing.

Especially where it regards "fan art," it seems the law can be somewhat vague on the subject. However, it seems that most Tron-inspired textures (or any other based on an already existing work), even if they're re-drawn from scratch with modifications, would fall under "derivative work," in which case no one could claim copyright except the original authors/artists (e.g., Disney—which, by the way, got no copyright acknowledgment in your 'read me').

I think one thing it's safe to say is that Armagetron moviepacks cannot legitimately claim to fall under "fair use."
