I don't really see a point in points deduction - it creates too much gap between losers and winners. If someone loses too much points at start he may be discouraged and quit the league. Also if players like wap, liz, potter start with advantage then there's really no point in playing this, because I can bet any money one of them will win the whole thing. It's ok if SBT finalists will play in 1st tier, but giving them point advantage is bad idea.

I like the tier system - it's better if good players plays with good players and bad ones with bad ones ;> but I wonder how would you choose who will be playing who each round - in top tier there's 8 players - that's 2x 1v1v1v1 matches. And one more question - when will some players drop to lower tier and other advance - after several rounds or after the league is over? (how long will it take? - 4,8,16 games?)

Oh, and I'm not sure if 8 players for top division is enough - could be ok, but it seems too few to me (I'm too used to big 16-20 team leagues :))

Can't wait for this league to start.

Without point deduction, I really don't see the rankings changing that much at all, players in lower tiers won't have as much of a chance to advance into the higher tier.

As for point advantage, no, this will not be included, everyone will start equal. Or the alternative is to hold a double elimination tournament using classic 1v1v1v1 sumo, which will create initial rankings for the league. The double elimination aspect allows a more representative placement of the players.

Scheduling players is the main problem of the tournament, the points system can be worked out relatively easily, but getting everyone to play two matches per week is going to pose a major obstacle. I'm planning to create some sort of easily editable schedule where players can mark their time available each week, so that a schedule can be made based off player rankings/their times available.

I like 8 players, I think it creates some high level competition in the top tier with players constantly playing one another. It creates opportunities for people to surpass each other.

Everyone should start equal, I don't see why there's even a discussion about this. Points do need to be deducted, hence why there's ranking. If you can't handle possibly losing points then you're not fit for gaming.

Nice idea and I'll probably participate.

If you can't lose points you'll have someone on there 24/7, who even if they never win a match, will just keep amassing points.

Maybe if you'd read all of what I said you wouldn't be voicing your ignorance...

Gonzap, olive, and Poke are 3 people who missed the tournament and could have easily made it to the finals/semis...Read what I said from the beginning...

Some new thoughts:

The league will be preceded by a double elimination classic sumo tournament to create initial rankings as well as make scheduling much easier. Players will be organized into groups of 4 around the same rank, and if one player cannot attend a scheduled match, he will attempt to swap his scheduled match with one of the other 3 players in his group. A minimum of 2 matches still needs to be played each week, though players may freeze their ranking if they go on a short-term vacation.

How about this, everyone starts on some positive number of points, and they "stake" 10% of those points when they enter. That way, you can never get negative points.

Then all the "stake" goes into a single pool, and is divided according to some predetermined split, eg. 50%, 25%, 15%, 10%, 0%, 0%, 0% 0%.

So if everyone starts on 100, they all stake 10 points, so the pool is 80. Then the winner gets 40, and ends up on 130 (100 + 40 - 10), 2nd place gets 20, etc.

This way, the person at the top is always tested, and the person at the bottom always has a nice incentive at low risk to carry on playing. If there are 16 players in the league, there are always 1600 points in circulation (ignoring rounding errors), so it's a simple way for everyone to understand how it works.

I like dariv's idea, I believe it's easier to keep that from getting out of hand point-wise. Overall, this sort of league is completely new to me so if I were to argue I'd probably argue against it, but I'm curious to see how it'll work.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I already have a hard time freeing up Ladle mornings, so organizing each match will be a challenge. It would be cool, yet unrealistic, if we could just organize each match between the four challengers within a given period of time (I'd prefer 4/month).

As you said, that's unrealistic, if you can't spend a little more than 15 minutes twice a week to play a match, then don't sign up.
