I thought we all agree that pickups are for pros, regardless if we like them or not.

That was a very good post Concord. I read all of it and 100% agree. For those reading this topic for the first time, I suggest going back one page and reading his post near the bottom.

Word wrote:Well, since i think that pickups disrupt ongoing matches more than clanwars do because they "steal" up to 80% of the players in the server (provided that it's full), it could be useful to reduce the number of player spots (e.g. 4v4 instead of 6v6 or what it's currently set to). That would be easier than writing a script or something like that. People will say that this won't allow them to show off great strategies, but they can do the same things in regular fort. Pickups were meant to be more exclusive than authed fortress (Hello!), so this doesn't even clash with the original intention.

Before you reply, read my full post, and I mean the whole sentence. Or does that overload your intellect? Why don't you make some good points like Concord did?

The pickup fans go to IRC, ask the people in a regular fort game to come, play their matches, and leave when there aren't enough anymore. If you don't like that, you aren't forced to take part. You certainly aren't a better player when you know how to join pickups.

I didn't catch this the first time I read it, but this is a total misconception. Pickup matches are no more serious than public ones. Same goof-balls doing the same goofy stuff on a different server. You have just as much chance of a serious match in Mega Pro. It's one of the reasons I don't really care for pickup. It's like, "why bother? Same people, same game, slightly different settings."

excellent post concs

reminds me of a buddhist story
of a master who disallows a student from attending his class
but the student continues to study and practice outside the master's class
by asking a fellow student to keep the door open slightly
thinking that he is doing so covertly for a few months
he finds out that master knew this all along...

i still think this game is good enough to attract hundreds of thousands of players worldwide...
just watched a documentary about bobby fischer
and just what a social phenomenon chess became
hold the line

9v9 clusterfuck no1curr bout winning vs 6v6 where people are put specifically in a certain position and teams actually try to win- Yeah no, you're wrong. Pickup is way more serious than G5's/MB's and the skill is higher.

I guess I've never seen it because I don't play p/u enough. If the spectrum of competitiveness were measured by public games being 0 and Ladle being 10, I would rate p/u games around a 3, in my experience. Maybe it's just because I'm on 10 all the time.

It did? Beginning with and all because of him? Gosh, why didn't his raving anti-semitism catch on?

Most of the time I do try to win a 9v9, and I see stupidity just as often in pickup as in 9v9. If anything it's more annoying in pickup because at least in G5's server, you didn't wait 10 minutes to pick teams just for your final pick to go afk/refuse to sweep/ragequit.

Hate the players, not the game.

Good point dariv, I see that too in p/u games. I'll try to lighten up about them and give it more of a chance. Maybe I'll see what others do eventually.

No he doesn't, chill out. Besides, he's responding to a comment by 2020, whose posts are generally composed from wide-arching ideas. They are almost guaranteed to derail a thread, haha.
