I played this in MTA and thought the game mechanics can be used for an Armagetron server as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0W8tYXzcvk#t=3m41s
At start both teams are spawned far away from each other.
One team has to plant bombs in the other teams zone (which is spawned a bit away from their zone). to achieve this they need to stay in this zone for a certain time (i think that's 5 seconds in MTA). if you get killed before you've planned the bomb (or made the zone shrink completely) the progress remains and it's easier next time you reach it. Once a bomb is planted a new zone appears which is closer to the defending team's spawnpoints. Players get automatically respawned after 20 seconds. When all bombs are planted all defenders die. If they can protect at least one zone they win. In the next round the teams stay the same but they switch roles.
(and no, shooting isn't required here...i don't shoot at all when i try to run in a zone in mta - sometimes i throw teargas so i'm left alone while i'm planting the bomb )
Without shooting, how is the defending team supposed to kill the opposing player within 5 seconds. I guess it kind of depends on the settings and zone size, but I think the timer should increase a little.
Why isn't playing MTA (whatever that is) satisfying enough for you? Why must everything other video games do, no matter how unrelated in concept, be shoved into Armagetron? Can't you ever be satisfied and leave it be? I don't mean stasis and lack of evolution; I mean staying within the fundamental concept(s) of this game. Isn't there a line somewhere? Can't games stand on their own, individual merits?
The only thing that wouldn't be in accordance with the fundamental concepts are the zones. You can still get points for core dumps. But the teamwork can decide the end of the round as fast as in fort. the map wouldn't look too goofy, just big.
And I think a BdB server would open the way for new strategies that aren't common in fort servers (defending/attacking many bases at the same time, players who only try to distract the enemies, 9 players that all attack the same zone).
This would also be a good chance to test these explosive chain reaction-settings once they are working (in mta that's a molotov cocktail you throw on someone who runs arround and ignites his friends ).
"No man, power-ups and chain guns wouldn't deviate from the fundamental concept of soccer, just so long as they're still wearing shin guards and running on grass!"
It's just one small circle that disappears and another one that replaces it...how doesn't that do Tron justice? Players can still do everything they want to win. But the score encourages more teamwork and strategies.
MTA isn't satisfying enough for me because my ping is 300 there.
Word, if you just forget about the Bomb aspect for now, what you are talking about it a server that uses King of the Hill Zones. Perhaps a good server and map that uses that would be a good starting place?

don't like it? Don't play it. Same goes for me and my friends playing chaingun football. Nobody else seems interested ( ), but they don't tell us to NOT play.
The Halley's comet of Armagetron. ps I'm not tokoyami

To check out the info on King of the hill zones, go to this page and search for "koh". It is a type of zone that Kyle created for a now defunct, "King of the Hill" server. To conquer the zone, you have to hold the zone for a specified ammount of time, without another player coming into the zone.

I thought one of the things that makes Armagetron such a great game was the room for flexibility, innovation, and creativity. I really like how Armagetron works as a viable environment for many game types.
