Fortress Showcase

Post by þsy »

Through discussion in the fort cafe thread, I present you with my own tournament idea. Constructive comments only please!

Setup
- Sign up your team on a wiki
- Your team is randomly assigned 3 fixtures (or more?) against other teams who have signed up
- Competitive matches are played and completed, then you wait for your next match
- There are no winners overall, the fixtures are essentially organised friendly matches

Advantages
- Good opportunity to try new ideas, break unexperienced players into competitive fortress
- Will allow lower quality teams which often get knocked out of the first round in most ladles to play a succesion of games at a good standard
- With no overall winner, a more relaxed attitude and lots of fun
- No winner = more risk, which will encourage people to cut the defence more like old fortress
- Only 4 teams need to sign up in order for this work (SP can probably provide half of that by itself  )
- Will encourage more people to get involved in fort; won't need to reach a certain 'level' of fort in order to play like with ladle
- The closest thing we could probably get to a fort league without a heap of organising like last time
- Teams/clans always want at least one friendly a month outside of ladle, but they can be a pain to organise. This will organise 3 for you!
- Pure fortress without other agendas. We don't play to win, we play because we love the game!
- A good forum to spot new talent
- Similar to the oh-so-loved pickup games, except better!

Disadvantages
- There are other tournaments during the month, this is too much!
- I don't know how to make a wiki, so someone else will need to do it for me
- I only play to win, if I can't win, what's the point?
- I like to disagree with any new ideas on this forum, so I'm just gonna go with that

Further Discussion
- If people like this idea, how often should be played? Monthly? Bi-monthly? (3rd Sunday every month/every other month)
- Should the physics stay same as ladle? Should we get rid of holes to encourage more cutting?
- Is Harold Camping a genius or a moron?

We always have trouble organising wars, so something like this would be good for us, if it's regular 6v6 fort.

could be a good idea. Still it's not what I wanted originally with my post in fort cafe. I want LADLES to be more like this.

Yeah I know, but it's a step in the right direction at least. However, it's not really designed to create old school fort once again, but just get everyone together for some games of fort

I'm gonna try and get this going for the third sunday of next month (19th June). I hope this settles well with everyone

What did you want gonzap? For ladles to be like fort cafe, or ladles to be like this?

Edit- just a thought, if we open the possibility to tournaments on weeknights there would be far more possibilities of wars and leagues.

Sounds good to me. Sunday nights, ladle time should work for everyone. Ladle settings is the best way to go as I see it.

sounds good, but i think you may be using a wrong word here

Bi-monthy is not every other month, but twice a month
how about the 5th Sunday of the month :) looks like that happens about 4 to 5 months a year

Hmm, my Oxford dictionary disagrees (or is a horrid compromise) http://oxforddictionaries.com/page/meaningbimonthly

I'd like this to be run at a time whenever is most convenient as possible for everyone. Every 5th Sunday would always be the weekend before ladle, which could either mean everyone gets in gear for the following weekend, or it's too much fort and should be spaced out across the month more evenly.

I would really like to try a mid-week day, but all tournaments seem to be Sunday evenings and people always seem to be more busy during the week. What do people reckon?

There seems to be some positive feedback about this (I guess it's not really a controversial idea) so I think I'll get working on the logistics of this soon. My exams finish in a couple of weeks, so I'll get this organised after then

I guess I'll have to hunt my third of fourth grade teacher down :P
I guess my reasoning for why i would not think it would mean both is because biannually is twice a year and not every 2 years..(oh well enough of that)

I just was thinking something was already the third Sunday of the month. but i see what you are saying about 5th Sunday being too close to ladle as would 4th or second.

do it once. if it's successful, then argue about when to regularly schedule it.

Sounds good to me, 19th June it is

To go off in a slight tangent, there is the possibility that this could become a low-key weekly event... Like a cross between the pick-up and the ladle. So, for example, we could have it so that every monday night is showcase night, and all the teams who signed up that week play the three friendlies and that's that. If it became popular, we could have so that the teams are cemented in (with slots for teams who want to play one-offs), and if not enough players can make it, a team can opt out?

It wouldn't be a massive committment, because you could take yourself off the roster if you couldn't get enough for that week. Most teams could probably provide 6 players once a week, and if not non-clan/team members could always fill in.

I think I'll try this one time like Concord suggested (unless you all are really really taken by that idea ^ ) and bear the idea above in mind for potential implementation in the future.
