"Deving Armagetron is like eating pizza. It's great to eat pizza sometimes, but if I ate nothing but pizza, I'd go mental." - The forums admin :)

Or, er, maybe just make your own thing up...

"Don't touch it, it'll break!" would be my overall assessment of the current coding structure. I'm glad none of you listens to me :)

It's your talk, put into it whatever you like. I'm short on time this week, but if you need specific information ( for example, if you want to spend a minute on AA's historty ), I'll help.

Short history of Armagetron:

Jan 2000: First version published as "Walls". No AI, no sound, no network. Just two player splitscreen mode.

Feb 2000: Renamed to Armagetron ( please don't look up any movie charts of that time.... )

Mar 2000: First version with crude networking

May 2000: Moved project to SourceForge

June 2000: First "official" Armagetron tournament at the "Ruhrpott-Ruler", a local LAN party

( Things start to move more slowly now because of RL )

Mar 2002 - May 2003: first long development pause

June 2003: Version 0.2.0 released ( The earliest version with network compatibility until today ), master server goes online

Sept 2003 - Jan 2005: second long development pause, AA gets forked because z-man plays dead

( You probably know the rest better than me, like the release of 0.2.7.0 )

Hmm. Even in this condensed form, this history is boring :(

Perhaps Tank or others could shed a little light on how AA was "forked"? This may be interesting because it involves people :) I only know that it exists and that I'm part of it now, that's enough for me.

Dec 2003: I start playing on Mixnetwork's speed server. It became very popular then, and I had just written my Armagetron Stats thing in Java. So, I suggested he run it for his users. And he did, for awhile. Then introduce iF. We got to talking, introduce the idea for an online community.

Dec 18 2003: Introduce the forums, still at the same url today as they were then. (Albeit different server hardware & ips...) E-mails were sent to various server admins. Within a day Verement responds, and places an add in his server's (Armagoshdarn) between round messages. Without this exposure, I'm afraid the place woulda never gotten off the ground.

The following months: We continue to grow here... At the urgings of iF, I start to tinker in the code. And you know what? I found some interesting things to mess with :). After trying with Marrow to set up our own CVS server for what was becoming quite a lot of code changes. HUD, remote admin, minor bugfixes, we decide to go for a sourceforge projects after debating a takeover. We decided on a new projects as we wanted to keep the original armagetron project in its glory :D.

So basically, we're here cause of the above events. Or, at least that's how I seem to remember it...

Well, my wife just laid on a carnival at my daughter's school tomorrow. :( (I don't like elementary school carnivals) So I have to go to that, and turn in a paper for Monday, and studystudystudy.

Why couldn't they hold out until late May and catch all the college kids too?

a few new ppl were exposed to armagetron

i gave a little graphics mod preesntation for it on a projector

and we played it some a few of us, (not as much as i had hoped for)
& ppl got to see the gameplay on the wall projector while we played

:)

it was pretty small tho, they coulda advertized better

some casemodder walked away with about $1500 worth of prizes tho

he had a neat mini form watercooled custom thinga-ma-jig
