Does anybody play local?
So, I am a newbie, and call me old fashion, but I love playing against the AI's in games. So I was wondering if there are any tricks to playing local vs. online?

Re: Does anybody play local?
What do you mean by "tricks?"
I've been lobbying to make the local game more interesting, fun, and rewarding. I think it's on the back-burner with the developers, but we'll see.

Well by tricks I mean, tips for good ways to get core dumps, ways to set good traps, etc.
Re: Does anybody play local?
Also, I have the walls set to 300m, what do you think are the best settings for local games?

Well, the AI are mostly defensive (something else that should be getting an overhaul). I don't know that you need any special tricks. Cut them off, box them, make them crash into your wall. Practice, try different things, and you'll catch on. It can be more fun discovering ways yourself, anyway.
The fun thing about playing locally is you can configure all the settings to your liking. And since you're new, I'll point out that goes beyond the game setup in the menu. Open up settings.cfg and settings_dedicated.cfg, and browse the various settings. Play around with them. What's best is what you like best. (I would strongly recommend never setting CYCLE_RUBBER over 5, though.
)
Note two things:
1) Some settings have two versions, one of which will have a SP_ prefix, which refers to Single Player. That's the one you want to change.
2) a) To temporarily change settings within the game, type the commands into the console command line. Not the 'chat' line—there's a separate key to bring up the command console. (I can't remember what it is by default; check System Setup> Misc Stuff > Global Keyboard Configuration for "Console input.") Doing it this way, each time you quit and restart the game the settings will reset to default + whatever you've previously set in the menu's game setup.
b) To make any change permanent, do not modify the above files. Instead, create a new file called autoexec.cfg (plain text) and put it in your var folder/directory. (Don't know what OS you use so....) This way the settings won't reset upon a quit and restart—unless you manually change them yourself, of course.

I don't know where it is with your OS. I'm a very un-geeky Mac user. You'll have to wait for someone familiar with yours to answer.
It might be on the wiki, though. Take a look.

OK not a problem
Re: Does anybody play local?
if you are on windows the easiest way is to go start-> programs ->armagetron advanced -> system data -> config -> settings.cfg
The Halley's comet of Armagetron.

Re: Does anybody play local?
I never played local that much allI use it for is to test something real quick but once I got this game I jumped rite in to the online play im still not so good with the game its self but ive always been good with the concept of the lightcycle style game.
Re: Does anybody play local?
The default place for settings.cfg is in /etc/armagetronad. It's systemwide and you need to borrow root rights to edit it and it gets overwritten on updates, so you should leave it alone. Instead, collect your small personal changes in ~/.armagetronad/var/autoexec.cfg.
Re: Does anybody play local?
I play local a lot. I've made several games/servers where the AI play crucial roles. (In fact, I'm sitting on a new game now, but don't have time or money to release it just yet. Soon though, very soon.
Adventures of TRON are my currently unavailable servers. I have other's that I haven't had time to add to the wiki, like this one here -- Destroy the MCP. All the games I make are designed to be good single player games on local machines before they are made public.
