Help! Opinions! Ladle Servers/Spectator Slots/Lag!

Post by apparition »

I'm looking at getting USA/UK servers from Luke for Ladle to replace TSP servers during Ladles only.
  • Does anyone have experience with Luke's servers with that many connections?
  • Anyone know how his servers hold up in Ladles?
  • Would reducing the server slots help lag?
  • If we do reduce the server slots could we apply Z-man's new spectator filter on more than the last person entering the server but maybe the last 2 people entering the server to account for participants entering the server?

This topic could be merged with the other one about servers I created. Kind of a different topic, but whatever.

the new spectator filter isn't contributing imo (haven't heard of any positive effects from it, fill me in if i'm wrong), and 32 slots is a minimum for smooth server switches.

I personally appreciate your efforts but aren't you going a little hard at it?

The _~R~_ server from this ladle was hosted on the TSP Kansas server, and I made sure the people who played there would report back if they were lagging. I've had 0 complaints, and 100% of the people I asked said the server was good.

I don't mean to sound defensive, but I'd like to have played 6v6 on at least one of luke-jr's servers before planning to use plenty of them for the ladle.

INW's server performs well, the problem there is that he doesn't have enough access to fully manage it.
CT's USA won't go anywhere I hope.
_~R~_Kansas works well.

That's 3 out of the 4 we need. If luke-jr's performs well that could be our 4th. TSP CH can be our 5th (assuming it'll still be there in a month) - a last resort along with Velocity's.

As a side-note: do the complaints regard the german TSP server as well?

Well didn't someone say the pRu server worked well? G5's works pretty well also.

CT USA along with TSP CH were pretty laggy this ladle. I also heard something about CT LIV shutting down or something during one of the matches.

Oh I was only talking about USA servers. I see no problems in the current set of european servers.

I would hold the Velocity server over TSP CH because it is better.

I am going to work out a deal with scene and try to get more access to the server "stuff".

Well, the spectators getting kicked are complaining. A lot. Every time. None of them read the disconnect reason, they take it personally. And it needs better protection against kicking players currently logging in. But it does fulfill its purpose; no more stress keeping slots for players open manually. Keeping two slots open is pointless, though; it always keeps one slot open, and one is all that is ever needed.

I need to look into LIV, that shutting down should not be a problem in the future. as for CT USA, seamed like it may have been a bad day for the server.

I really am not sure how lukes will handle, but a lot of it will probably be dependent on how many of the servers he host actually have people in them

EDIT: 1 slot open means that scores can be collected on irc with .ss

EDIT2: Thinking about it, now with seeding we also need some way to determine what servers get used and where. us and euro alternate. With seeding, people get to decide what server(s) the seeds will play on.

+1
I had that thought...It is pointless to give someone a seed and put them in an uncomfortable server.

But without some sort of server rankings, we can't do anything about it. Good luck coming up with that system. And then we're left with the dilemma of screwing over seeds 1 & 4 or seeds 2 & 3 every month. Or alternating who gets screwed (if anyone really gets screwed at all). And even then that's no guarantee the selected servers will perform correctly. Personally, I'm "comfortable" in all Ladle servers, so I'm not sure what that means to put someone in an uncomfortable server.

And the benefit of getting a seed is already huge -- a potential bye, or an easier team in the opening round. Maybe we should give seeded teams foot massages too?

Oh yeah, we already have backup servers to choose from in each final. That's not enough? Give me a break.

Back to this idea about placing the servers on the challenge board. I brought it up because currently with seeds the person that sets it could potentially give the seeds bad servers on purpose, I'm not saying the would, but it could happen.

So here is the way I see going about fixing it. Why not have monthly (maybe even quarterly votes) to rank the servers. 1-4 (1 being the best and 4 the worst) for both US and Euro servers. The default servers for semi finals are the ranked 1, and 2's as backup. rank 3 and 4's then are filled in on the quarter finals, taking into amount there are ranked 1,2,3, and 4 in the top half and bottom half with 2 from US and 2 from Euro.
here is how I would randomize them (when USA is default for finals)

Well, we already have a voting system in place. Might as well use it. And your sexy tournament page is sexy.

Also, there is this suggestion I made about server rankings (probably not needed with your clever system).

Luke-Jr's servers are Godly compared to the other USA servers used for the ladle. I've had Luke's servers before, and they have VERY good pings with no annoying as hell lag spikes, plus if you buy a VPS from him you can have well over 10 servers without any lag at all.... I'd recommend it.

There are 2 new USA servers in the ladle both hosted on an expensive dedicated server from Albany, NY. These servers beat Luke's chessy VPS rip offs. ;)

Can I just add, the point of seeds is generally to ensure the best teams don't meet each other until the late stages of the tournament.

It's not meant as a fundamental advantage to those teams. So I don't see why servers should be chosen to favour seeds. All that does is to give an unfair advantage to the teams which we know are better already.

Like in tennis, you won't see Federer play Nadal in the opening round of a competition. But at the same time, Federer is not given any actual advantage in the opening round against whoever he plays. Letting the seed pick the server would be like letting Federer pick the court surface.

Server choice should remain random, or at least be decided on team locations rather than team rank.
