I work with kids ages 5-12 and they LOVE playing armagettron online, however I am having problems with the foul language in the servers
Is there anyway to turn off chat permanently...every time I turn it off...when I go into a new server the chat returns.. If I can't fix this I will have to uninstall off their machines Please help if you can?
Thanks
Kristie

ENABLE_CHAT isn't a setting that is saved when you exit the game. As a general rule, settings that you change through the console (because they are not available through the GUI) are not saved in your config. What you need to do is create a file called autoexec.cfg. This file is loaded when the game starts up.
Go to the same directory that contains your user.cfg file. You can find this path by going to the “About” menu item in the game. Create a plain-text file called autoexec.cfg, and in it put the settings you want the game to use. In this case:
Edit: If you're changing the “System Setup → Misc Stuff → Text Output” option in-game: that setting is strange. The game forces it on when you enter a networked game. I don't know why it was designed that way.
will get rid of all text. But then you don't get to see kill points, e.t.c. but IDK if thats what you want.

Plain text. Make sure it's not autoexec.cfg.txt but just autoexec.cfg and that you've placed it in the right directory. If that still doesn't work try placing it in everytime.cfg.
Yes, just what we want, a bunch of kids playing who don't (read: can't since chat is disabled) listen to instructions and stuff!
No offence, but they are probably going to get kicked and suspended ALOT from internet games. Perhaps learn to host a LAN game where they can play with internet settings, but just with each other?
Or maybe they can play tr2n? Its alot less popular than armagetron, but its alot more strict on rules such as swearing etc.

If you saw how good some of these kids are, you might change your mind....we are talking mensa kids....they school any adults out there including myself...with ease!!
A label such as mensa means nothing. Mine was but a friendly warning that if you isolate yourself (via the chats) you won't be able to interact in what is a multiplayer game. No interaction in team-modes means no matter how smart you are, or how good you are individually, you'll probably end up letting the team down somehow.
And people are sometimes not very forgiving in this game, especially if someones not responding to when you are trying to explain things to them.

But seriously, then it applies even more. Here is but an example, that is most obvious to me, but there would be other problems from a lack of communication:
Imagine they join a fort game. Crazy tronners wild fort, G5's, its irrelevant. Not unlikely, since its widely played, and most people sort by 'users', or like the pretty colours of CTWF.
What do new players never do? Grind at the start. What can you do about it? Telling people usually does the trick, since 80% of the time, new players don't seem to realise that what everyone else is doing is what you are supposed to do, either because they are used to playing differently, or because they are too scared to screw something up, or always die when they do that.
Now, please don't misconstrue this as me not wanting new players, even new younger players.
Ages 11+ was about when I started playing online games, and my friends and I were already experimenting with foul language. If I didn't understand some of the context or words on games, I generally didn't follow it up, but otherwise I was OK with common profanity...
At younger ages, I realise the need to cover up some of the language, so thats why I recommend LAN games, since they get to play with people of their own skillset, make and become better friends with kids their own age, and are not exposed to adult themes like those found online.
