Blizzard stepped in it, boy did they. Have y'all been watching this?
It looks like they're tightly focused on the forums, and remaining anonymous in-game is still perfectly ok, but I thought it would be fun to talk about it here, too, since we face many/most of the same issues.

Re: Remaining anonymous
IMO this is a bad idea.
I don't really care if I am able to be anonymous or not; but there are others who certainly do not want their identity out there.
I think this will have a heavy effect on:
Female gamers
Famous gamers
Female or famous gamers who do not think of creating a fake Facebook account

Re: Remaining anonymous
As Armagetron matures, I think that the servers with the "best of the best" players in them should require authentication, and block the ability to hide your GLOBAL_ID. Let's face it, it would be more fun for everyone to just have to be known, in some servers.
However, I think that the current defaults are the best. Armagetron has always philosophically been about freedom, and the alllowance for some pleasant anarchy. This freedom has been vital in building a small, but fiercely loyal coommunity!
Let's face it, people enjoy impostering, causing trouble, and trolling! I assume that this is the internet, and people want to be able to play in game servers anonomysly!
However, I think that things should evolve quickly to well-run tournaments requiring all players to authenticate, and there not be the ability for players playing in a tournament to hide their GLOBAL_ID.
Just my 2 cents.

I think we've shown here, and Blizzard has as well, that it's possible to have authentication and still protect people's privacy by allowing them to remain anonymous.

Re: Remaining anonymous
I totally agree. The more I learn about online gaming, which Armagetron is the only online gaming community I have ever been apart of, the more I read articles like this one Lucifer posted, the more sure I am about the long term success of Armagetron. I can easily foresee a future of Armagetron remaining "small" but growing to be quite "large". I have some ideas that I would like to start implementing with Armagetron, that I was going to implement with TR2NOrigins. However, originally, I was going to be doing a bunch of TR2NOrigins stuff this summer. However, 6 week ago we bought our first house, a forclosure. It is a 120 year old house that was built in 1890: 4 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, a nice large kitchen, a celler with 3 rooms and a pantry. I just finished spending the last 6 weeks scraping wallpaper, plastering walls, sanding walls, sanding floors, sanding woodwork, staining woodwork, and varnishing floors. Now we are about 80% moved out of the Mobile Home we have owned: 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, living room, laundry area, single wide. So, now I get to spend the next 6-8 weeks getting fully moved out of there, and finishing the stuff that cant be done while we were living there. Fortunately, I have had a lot of labor from my father-in-law, nephew, son, mother-in-law, and wife to get it done so far, and same to help with the finish. I also run an new "Internet Marketing Business" selling ebooks that covers my server costs, and is giving me a pittance of an income. Once we are fully out of the "Mobile Home" and into the house, i have a new "job" selling ebooks, that will pay well, when i can actually put some time into it.Lucifer wrote:I think we've shown here, and Blizzard has as well, that it's possible to have authentication and still protect people's privacy by allowing them to remain anonymous.
This is why I am going to turn my ladle servers over to sine, and a few others.
Also, my soon to be former host http://www.2host.com has been replaced. They were great for the first 6 weeks, and turned to crap. They will have been the host for TSP NC and TX servers. I have just seen enough of an increase in income to allow me to buy much better quality and more expensive servers, so, its happening.
Also, I am going to run those scripts for gridstats. But, we just celebrated my son's 16th birthday party, and the day of that my GodMother, who I was pretty darn close to died unexpectedly. So, I don't want to run the scripts when I am so exhausted that I might mess them up. My wife works tommorow, so I should have time. Thank you to all of you that have been dying to see that.
It is 2 am (2:00) my time, and I won't be able to go to bed for another hour or two. Sorry for the crazy long post, I just want those following this thread to know why I have been TO BUSY LATELY, to do much with tron, other than play some.

Re: Remaining anonymous
I still do not understand why Blizzard is even bothering making this change, the forums are fine the way they are now.
If their goal is to cut down on trolling, they are doing it wrong; maybe they should cut down on their own trolling first?

The whole facebook phenomenon has really changed the 'surreality' of the web. I'm an old skooler born in the 60's , to me the 90's internet was the reality of a ham/CB radio. (you still with me read on)
In a time where it seems is Facebook is a huge ploy to reveal citizens true identities and intimate info.http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php? ... &aid=12685 and the smart phones eagerly want to broadcast our real time coordinates. It's no surprise that the all-time most successful gaming company has been roped into this odd new protocol.
Add a real ID to a SEGA developer Yu Suzuki's idea of motion controlled implants http://regator.com/p/79780367/intereste ... _segas_yu/ and you really are moving into a Brave New World.
Did anyone here get a swine flu vaccine. There's information out there claiming that was the first official vaccine to contain nanotechnology microchips on the point.
Maybe I'll just legally change my name to Ari Lou just to mess with them

You can't be serious. And you're referencing David Icke as a source? Come on, now. That information is "out there," alright.arilou wrote:Did anyone here get a swine flu vaccine. Personally, I am not willing to debate the "nanotechnology" issue about the swine flu vaccine. I just want to know why one of the big pharma companies owns a patent for the virus.Phytotron wrote:You can't be serious. And you're referencing David Icke as a source? Come on, now. Because of government deregulation of corporations. It's called free-market capitalism. Any suggestion of breaking up and regulating big business gets shouted down by the right as "socialism on the march!"compguygene wrote:Personally, I am not willing to debate the "nanotechnology" issue about the swine flu vaccine.
