Looks like they're trying to put a cap on the situation: http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-0 ... ate2-.html
Re: Mother of all gushers could kill Earth's oceans
From the figures I have seen its spewing out around 5000-25000 barrels a day so about 790000 to 4000000 litres and 210000-1100000 gallons. At the low end it will take about 2 years at 5000 barrels a day to get to be 454000–480000 tons (the worst spill in the gulf of mexico to date) and at the high end about half a year at 25000 barrels a day to get to and surpass that figure.
So while it will definitely have an effect on the immediate coast, and some places where the current takes it, unless they do nothing to stop/contain/slow it within a few months I doubt it will be as earth-endingly bad as that article states. Also the worst spill in history, the gulf war spill in the Persian gulf, had anywhere from 3 times the amount as the worst gulf of Mexico spill to 200 times the amount (1,360,000–113,293,207 tons) and the earth is still here, though they are different environments I know. I'm not saying this isn't a devastating and horrible situation, I'm just saying put it into perspective and don't jump straight to "end of days" scenarios.
Wikipedia references:(i don't consider these as hard facts for the numbers, but they give a good estimate)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepwater_ ... _explosion and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_spill

What van said...
Can't say I'm sorry for not beleiving some doom article straight away
Although it did inform me of the scale of the situation, I guessed it was just 'some oil leak'

Thanks Van, I was interested enough to go read more about it, but not interested enough to come back and rebutt the crackpots.

Re: Mother of all gushers could kill Earth's oceans
It's massive enough. It will very likely be devastating. To what extent remains to be seen, but it's a crucial and sensitive area (both ecologically and economically), even if limited to the Gulf of Mexico. There's no humor in it. That there are people who weren't even aware of this level of news is pathetic and disgraceful. Even if you watched only one 30-minute evening newscast (I know it's too much to ask that someone read a newspaper) over the past two weeks you would have heard about this. Get your myopic, narcissistic heads out of your collective asses.
[Actually, my original post, in response to Smart's "Who cares about it all" was going to be "Obviously not god." But then I realised some evangelical or fundamentalist would come along and respond with either the "this was a man-made disaster, and god gave man free will, blah blah" or more crap about how, like Katrina, it's more of god unleashing his spiteful, sadistic wrath upon New Orleans. We don't need to go there again.]

There's devastation, and then there's devastation that will depopulate the world. I'm not saying "don't care about it", just once again saying "dismiss the crackpots, they're just building up to the conspiracy".

I didn't actually read the page Liz linked. I didn't recognise the source, and have kept informed with established, credible sources. (Anyone else notice she later cited FOXnews?
)
Conspiracies also worthy of dismissal: It's some god's wrath. Rush's toxic (no pun intended), lunatic assertion environmentalists blew it up. Obama delayed response so he could use it as an excuse to end not only offshore oil drilling (of which he previously approved the expansion), but fossil fuels entirely. Obama and his Administration, including Ken Salazar, are rabid environmentalists.

Re: Mother of all gushers could kill Earth's oceans
My point wasn't that this won't be devastating, just saying that it probably won't end the world or kill the oceans. Even if it were stopped within the next few weeks(unlikely) it will wreak havoc on the local coastline and marine life for quite a while. I agree with you that it's surprising some people didn't hear about this before or thought it was a joke, it's been all over news tv/paper/websites for weeks now. Hell it was on the daily show and colbert report last week I think.

Because knowing about this current issue is totally going to make it that much easier to deal with, especially since such great citizens of the world (Phytotron) are going to get off their lazy asses and do something about it! What was written on FOX was also written on various other news sites so I don't know what your fxcking nitpicking point is.

ItzAcid plays all his arma in school & does all his homework in the evening so he has no time to check a 30 minute news broadcast
Are you going to volunteer to help clean up the coast, Phytotron?
One thing's for sure when it's plugged and all the lawsuits are over you won't hear anything else about it
