Shoutcasting/Recording

And we should invest some thought into the recording. Anyone with good recording experience in tron could probably help tons. The ladle stream's quality seemed pretty bad (I watched it for like 10 seconds in total), but I bet things could be improved by tweaking some settings etc.

Should be a match to remember!

/me votes for sine.wav as commentator.
Unless he's playing.
And someone else aswell to assist. Gene maybe?

The ladle recording had a really good video quality. Maybe some developer can add a constant (small, transparent) score table somewhere on the HUD that was used. Or atleast Enemies/Friends alive.

Or maybe it's enough that the commentators follow the scores and who is alive? Sidewave did a good job on that imo.

At some point I started holding tab during the rounds, but yes I also suggested that the score could be consistently on the screen somewhere. Obviously only team scores.

I'm not sure if this is what was done before, but I think there should be a way for the commentator to be able to choose which player everyone is watching. During the match, it seemed like the camera was focused on places with little action a lot of the time.

This is seriously off topic, can we get a split? There is potential for a good shoutcast thread here.

Or how about a compressed version of the full score table? Something like this.
On the top half of the picture, it's just how the score normally looks in 0.3
On the bottom half is my compressed version*.

Here's one picture where I add it on epsy's HUD that was used in the ladle recording.

The scores and player names are obviously inaccurate, but this isn't math class is it??

*There's one thing missing: Showing who's alive and who isn't. This could be done by coloring the score perhaps? green for alive, red for dead. Or anything that doesn't take up too much space.

I really love that HUD epsy. With some minor additions it will be great for Ladle videos.

And sinewav should be banned from playing from now on

its damn impressive the quality of commentating coming from dubs and sine with such unpreparedness and (assumed) inexperience. It was also fantastic having a complete greenhorn in britguy in the booth asking questions.

moving forward, perhaps we'll get a bit more well defined roles in the booth play-by-play/color commentary, better camerawork- less player-centric, more zone-centric.

I'd like to thank epsy, for3cas7, and dubs for making the shoutcast possible. I think it was a great start, and I'd like to see more of it in the future.

Lizmatic's video is superb; even better than her earlier ones. It would be great to have her cockpit setup for future shoutcasts, possibly with a few minor tweaks. Her view is good enough that I almost don't see a need for different camera angles (and focusing primarily on a defender gives the best overview of the zone, IMO).

Regarding the commentary, I don't think it's 100% necessary for the commentator to follow the action on screen (I was commenting from my own local copy and not the stream). After all, you can already see what's happening! It's my personal belief that good play-by-play announcing will let you visualize the game in your head, and can be independent of the on-screen action. (When my friends and I watch American football, we usually listen to the radio and turn off the TV announcers when they are bad.) And unlike major sports where you follow a ball, Armagetron has action in two (or more) places, so it's nearly impossible to capture it all, unless you go with some sort of split-screen action.

Also, I enjoyed sharing the mic with dubs, and I thought she made some good contributions. Dubs, I heard you say a few times that you were "trying to be objective". I don't think objectivity is too important in sportscasting, haha! Say what you want.

I heard 2020 did some commentary earlier? I'd like to hear that if someone has it.

And, I volunteer if you want me to do it again.

that was pretty good, just one thing :P (me is an english noob) not everyone playing this game talks, or write, or can hear english perfectly, and that's pretty hard for me to understand it for example. You talk way too fast! Try to be a lil lil lil slower next time plz :D

Lol, I got distracted by the shoutcast in the beginning and then I was like oshit! need to find the action on my screen. Its hard at times but I'll get the hang of it. If someone wants to give me tips then feel free.

I thought you did a nice job. I would suggest, if anything, to focus on the center players during the initial grind (that's where the action is), then pan between defenders during the rest of the match. As long as you capture a falling zone, you've pretty much done your duty.

From what I have learned, the simplest way to set this up, albeit with not quite all the functionality, would be to setup a teamspeak 3 channel with specific permissions for the people that are doing the commentating. By the way, I have, for TheServerPharm, a non-profit organization license that allows me to go beyond the free server limit of 32 users. I can have up to 10 servers and a total of 10000 users. I also have a server just for teamspeak 3, forums, and other things. People could enter the channel to hear the talk and go to a website from which a VLC stream would run. Somebody who has a decent internet connection would run VLC on their local computer and Armagetron. This would stream up to the server where the server would stream to, Ideally a website. At this time, I am not aware of how to push the teamspeak 3 chat to a shoutcast stream, and then to add it to the video stream.
I think that the simplicity of a TeamSpeak 3 channel and website for the stream would be a good start. Of course, my web skillz are not the best by any means, and I would want to work with others in the community to make this happen. I can provide the TeamSpeak 3 server and the VLC stream.
Armagetron: It's a video game that people should just play and enjoy :)

When i spectate a match i usually use the free cam and park myself behind the arena walls and set the zoom and angle so that it captures the zone and all the action around the zone....

I guess its something like the small birds eye view of the both zones on each side thats already there but just like Concord has also mentioned i would rather see that full screen than see a camera that follows only one player.
Maybe two people can setup the camera in this manner over each zone and we can pan between them or if possible have a split screen to show both zones simultaneously.
