Back in the day, we used to only have a def. The concept of sweeping was introduced after the attack strategies involved holing, etc.
Now a days, we need a set of instruction booklets for the newer players since this format has become so sophisticated.
But in my opinion, one good def and one good sweep is sufficient to hold off two to 4 good attackers.
The rest need to focus on O R G A N I Z E D attacking. How you organize your attacks, depends on who you are.
My personal preference is two. The other two or three players can hang around the middle and assasinate the enemy.
I.E. if Psyko is creating problems for my def... my assassins would focus on making his life a bitch during the match.
Each team needs to identify the enemy's strong and weak points During the match to be successful.

That is the strategy of an old man!

+1

Well, it is possible to win matches by just sticking to the main strategy at all times, but without flexibility (no pun intended) you're not probable to win a ladle, let alone 3 in a row.

TREMOR: Responding to your request on sweeping tactics:
I had written a bad ass piece on this last week and i don't know where the heck it went.
So here it goes again, i hope this one is as good:
At start the sweeper(s) need to be the most outside grinders. My personal preference is one sweep and one def (as i had previously mentioned).
The first task of a sweeper is to prevent at all costs anyone from getting close to the def and to let the def establish his defense. This can be accomplished by breaking off earlier than usual and going toward the side walls, even almost touching them (beware cause sometimes GOOD attackers will grind toward the middle and beat you back to the core, so try to stay ahead of them). The middle three grinders should know what to do to seal off any tunnel (center attackers), so will the defender.

Once the sweeper goes wide, grind your own tail all the way back to the core...again make sure no one beats you to the punch or this move is useless and you just provided a GARIBAHN for the attack to **** shit up on your def.

Your task is to allow the defender to set up. Once the def is set up, keep preventing attackers from passing you toward the def, but be careful, this can cause serious damage to the def as good attackers will try to use you to hole your own def; instead, keep your distance from the def and let the attackers work their ass off to get through, once they pass YOUR line of defense - your role changes and you BECOME THEIR ASSASSIN! - stay outside of them and shorten their spaces by grinding them and sealing them against (your def, the back wall, your own wall, their own wall) EVERYTHING!
If they come in numbers, their focus is to kill you first so stay on your toes.

IF your def is killing them, make sure you keep plugging the holes.
As you clear the path for the defender by killing OFF the attackers, move away from the core so that the def can reset.
As attackers penetrate the def, make sure you shield OFF any other attackers and let your def battle ONE ON ONE sumo style, but if any other attackers penetrate, you can join the sumo circle as well.
And the last point is if the DEF tells you he/she is OK to attack, Move up your line and go toward the enemy and wait your turn to attack. If your team likes to attack in twos, or threes (whichever) then you will know what to do.

Hope this helps TREMOR.

If I assume good attackers a sweeper can hold at maximum 2 attackers. 3 can already speedhole and conquer a large part of the zone, or overpower the sweeper and kill him. 2 sweepers can hold 3 to 4 depending on the willingness to hole.

Thanks for the info, it truly does help.

Everything you just mentioned i see being implemented in ladles and fort matches.

The hard part i would say is after they do beat your sweeping is trying to kill them without killing yourself and worrying about your def.
