PortForwarding Problems(read)
PortForwarding Problems(read)
Alrighty I have port forward before and its fairly easy tbh. up until 7months ago.
~the story~
We have 6 computers in the house and 4 tvs.
We upgraded everything in the house(phone line, tv) to AT&T(7 months ago)
SO they came over and set everything up. Now heres were it gets complicated.
The 4 tv boxes(for the 4 tvs) all use the internet(something special about AT&T)
so The router they installed for connecting to the internet is "3800HGV-B Gateway"
4 Ethernet(tv) cables plugged in behind it and it only has 5 Ethernet plug-ins available.
SO for the 6 computers we had to buy a "switch" so we got the "PROSAFE® 8-PORT GIGABIT ETHERNET DESKTOP SWITCH 10/100/1000 MBPS
GS108" by Netgear. (THIS IS A SWITCH NOT A ROUTER)
so all 6 computers are connected to the 8port switch and the 8port switch is connected to the internet router(by a ethernet cable) so all computers/tv get internet.
Now ever since this I can't port forward. since the switch isn't a router, its stumped me. I would hope someone would here would know?
Also this is tron related cause im thinking about hosting a couple servers.
Thanks

The switch shouldn't interfere with port forwarding, it just manages the connections. It's still the router assigning the PCs their local IP addresses and managing the packet flow from them to the Internet and back. For the purpose of port forwarding, there isn't any difference between a PC directly connected to the router and a PC connected via the switch, unless either router or switch do something extremely silly.

Maybe the portswitch is a router? but I tested it out by tryin to login into it.
Well i guess I better call my ISP again.
Re: PortForwarding Problems(read)
You can check that. Plug your computer into the ...router directly and check what IP it gets assigned. If it's the same it gets when plugged into the switch, chances are the switch is really a switch.Cody <3 wrote:Maybe the portswitch is a router? but I tested it out by tryin to login into it.

Could this be the problem?
All computers are connected to the switch, and then a cable(ethernet cable) is connected to the actual router. Also all 6~ computers have the same Public Ip.
I really don't know what im doing wrong =[ and z-man tonight i'll try putting my computer directly in the router and see if i get the same ip and such.

My internet is run from a hub to a switch, no router. With the addition of the switch, port forwarding remained the same for me. However, might it help to try running the computer internets out of the router, and the tvs out of the switch? It seems that doing that would cut out the middleman and tell you wether the addition of the switch was what caused the issue.
If all else fails, just call AT&T. If they can't fix your port forwarding issue (which I'd bet they can), I'm confident that you could talk them down on your monthly bill or something due to dissatisfaction with these issues.

Damn, it sure has been a while!

Nope, that sounds perfectly normal.Cody <3 wrote:All computers are connected to the switch, and then a cable(ethernet cable) is connected to the actual router. Also all 6~ computers have the same Public Ip.

What port are you trying to forward, some sort of Server?
I know my ISP (f***ed up as it is) blocks port 80 at their end.
Is the cable pluged in? j/k what I mean is the Server running and accepting connections?
In the end you may need to use wireshark http://www.wireshark.org to see what's going on.......
It's free and may seem a little daunting but it's simpler that it seems.

Thanks for the link! I have been keeping an eye out for a free network protocol analyzer, but just haven't actually put any effort into finding one. I am planning to upgrade my Linksys router to be able to do traffic shaping, but to do it right, I need to run a protocol analyzer to get a grip on the network traffic in our house.

You're welcome. It's used by everyone - well good as anyway - commercial or otherwise. It used to be called ethereal.compguygene wrote:Thanks for the link! How did you find it?
Re: PortForwarding Problems(read)
Lol well I was uninstalling some programs I just don't need anymore so I found this firewall that is like 100+ times better then my old one, so i uninstalled it and installed my new one, then i got the idea of trying to portforward now.(since i've tried everything) and BOOM it worked lol.
Ohh to make sure it was the firewall I un-installed I re-installed it and boom ALL port blocks

It wasn't my old nemesis Norton by any chance? (I even found a warning on a download site: "If this download isn't working, uninstall Norton." That's how crappy it is.)
