Random Suggestions (Was: 0.2.8.3.1: What to put into it)

What do you want to see in Armagetron soon? Any new feature ideas? Let's ponder these ground breaking ideas...

Yep, I was showing what version the server used. So, I'm not quite sure what you mean by "Ill-named".
Could you elaborate and is there a fix for the issue?

Also, this reminds me. I get this in all of degree's servers. This is a screenshot from Degree Fortress.

EDIT: Sorry... I just realized I'm not posting in the 0.3.0 topic...

the dashes's(-) in the map_name are not supported anymore(they were never intended to be supported) so just ask the server admin to replace all them with underscores or something
map-name-0.1.0.aamap.xml should be come map_name-0.1.0.aamap.xml

Thanks kyle.

Another Random Suggestion that is *on-topic*.

Problematic players and the ban system:

It would be nice, when someone is kicked/banned that the ban_list have a name of the person that was banned, so instead of typing out the IP address to unban them, you just type in the name and it will do it for you. Also, when a server admin/mod bans someone, it will log who banned them in the ban_list along with a reason (Which I think is optional?). Just something I've always wanted to see.

Oh, look, more macho bullshit. I didn't reply to your PM because I didn't find anything about it worth responding to. And there was certainly nothing of it that indicated or suggested it was an "olive branch."

Is there room for improvement with the gameplay recorder and playback?

If so, I'd love to see that explored.

My hunch is that the response to that might be something along the lines of: "We don't have an actual gameplay recorder; we have a way of making debug recordings of game data. An actual gameplay recorder is some ways away."

There is theoretical room for improvement for game playback purposes with the current design, but it's very theoretical and would undermine the reliability of it's primary function and our general code quality. Even the concessions to purity for the sake of actual usability we make now (not recording passwords, ignoring graphics settings) are hacky enough.

How about changing the default LMS end-round text from "Winner: ______" to something like "Survivor" or "Round Survivor" or "Last Standing" (sans "man"). I'm not even aware of any server that has awarded a point(s) based solely on round survival, since the time I've been playing. So, at best it's pointless (in both senses of the word), and it also confuses some (granted, slow-witted) novices. WD! No points!

Even in a local game it doesn't make much sense given the default scoring. Plus, there's now that SCORE_SURVIVE setting. For that matter, perhaps removing that message altogether unless SCORE_SURVIVE is actually used.

(And speaking of which, isn't having both SCORE_WIN and SCORE_SURVIVE redundant?)

Not redundant at all.

There are servers in which you can survive and not win.

Is there any potential for more score settings, possibly with multiple conditions.

For example SCORE_KILL_WRT_OPPONENT which would attribute points for killing the opponent with regards to the opponent's score. Maybe a last man standing server where you get 1/2 your opponents score for killing them and they lose half their score for dying.

SCORE_WIN is only awarded to the last person surviving a round. Win = survive.

Phytotron: What Concord's mainly referring to are the racing servers that, for example, award 4 points to the first person who reaches the winzone and give everyone else who's still alive (aka who hasn't crashed into a deathzone) 2 points.

:/ I see. I suppose, then, the idea is that SCORE_WIN has been repurposed (similar to the way /login has), with SCORE_SURVIVE added to take its place. Well then, even more reason why the on-screen messages should follow.

In order to incorporate this racing business, I suggest the following:

• If SCORE_WIN and SCORE_SURVIVE are both zero, then replace the "Winner" message with—actually, how about nothing at all. No message. There's really no reason for even something like "Last standing." Yes, we see that; we're all made to look at that player.

• If SCORE_SURVIVE is set to some value, then replace "Winner" with "Survivor" or "Last standing."

• If SCORE_WIN is set to some value, then use the "Winner" message.

• If both SCORE_WIN and SCORE_SURVIVE are set to some value, then, well, perhaps it could just call whichever message is relevant at the time the score is awarded?
