From the past ladles (I counted back untill the roster layout changed) 5 were played in US servers and 3 were won by European teams. I personally dont give a shit about where the server is located, a high ping doesnt make me lag that much at all, ping jumps are horrible though.

I knew my comment on USA vs EU would spark off some reactions. I just felt like this topic deserved more attention, and it got it.

IMO this is a good solution, burn it down if you want to but at least post something good in return:
Maybe it'd be good to have interested players sign up first. Then devide the number of interested players by 8 (number of players on 1 team) and choose that amount of team captains. Each team captain would have a vote on the rules (just like ladle voting). The team captains will be responsible for arranging servers and managing their teams. I know it's hard to decide whether someone should be cap or not, but I read something about self-nomination in another thread which could work out quite well.

My apologies for the heated reaction to your post. I am just very tired of hearing how Europeans are always better at fortress.

As to the idea you just mentioned. It sounds just right! I do also recall a thread about self nomination of team captains. Sounds like a good plan. Dividing the signups by 8 also sounds good. I will put up a wiki page with the ideas we have discussed here, and with the name you mentioned earlier.

Just pick a date and make a sign-up page separated by region. After enough people sign up, we'll figure out all that captain stuff.

Sounds like a plan, and a project for me to do tomorrow morning. For now, sleep is needed.

Well it is fair since the possibility of which team gets to play in their home server twice is chosen randomly.
But I think it would be fairer if each team gets to play in their home server for the same number of matches (rounds) and use the total points accumulated to decide the outcome of the match.

The AVE?
I think Durka meant The International Tron World Cup. I can't even remember who won that one or if worked out at all, and you can't even see who participated because the site it was on isn't there anymore. Say what you want about the wiki but at least it is always there.
There's also this page with the teams that took part (no rosters though):

Alliances were composed of several countries.
Shame we didn't win that epic game against UK, for those who remember it :(

EDIT: what happened to this anyway? http://forums3.armagetronad.net/viewtop ... 60&t=19623

Ah ok, it is coming back to me now, I think it ended up being Canada joining with some staties to make NAFTA and then it being 8 on 2 with me and wrtl by the end of the first round vs germany. It was fun from what i remember anyways.

I think you have a very good point there. Then we could avoid the whole "switching servers" during gameplay thing!

Two matches, one in each teams home server. If one team doesn't win 2-0 you add up points to determine the winner... Good idea : )

One regular match in each server seems kinda short? Howabout two matches in each server or one 10-15 mins FPL style match in each server?

I am thinking that one 10-15 FPL style match in each server would be best. Most total points wins!

I'm not a fan of FPL style matches, as the gameplay radically differs from the 'first to 100' matches. FPL style matches are less tense IMO, yet it would be the best for this competition. I'd say 15 minutes in 1 server and 15 in the others?

By the way, is it possible to get servers on greenland or the azores? I noticed they are pretty much in the middle of the EU and USA.
