1 vs 1 fort tournament

1 vs 1 fort tournament
I heard this idea was pitched by Concord a few months ago, but failed. I must have been inactive at the time because I haven't seen it. Is anyone interested in this? Fortress is a teamgame, but 1 vs 1 is still new and I don't think it's been done before, it sounds interesting. Maybe new winners would arise, as it is so much different than sumo. I don't have the resources and knowledge of Tron to get this started, but I want to invite others to give some ideas and maybe take the initative to make this happen.

You made this topic because you wanted to write this, didn't you?Lizmatic wrote:Thoughts? Suggestions? Crying objections from Phytotron?

But seriously - I'm interested, but only a bit, team fortress is still much much better.
Re: 1 vs 1 fort tournament
to add on; i think even if this did work as a tournament not very many people would be interested. Reason being that the only reason a lot of people play 1v1 Fortress is that they're waiting for more people to come to have a real fortress match.
If this does work out, congratulations, but I don't really see the appeal of it.

Re: 1 vs 1 fort tournament
Corn1 is just bitter because I beat him in a 1 vs 1 that one time.
Seriously though-- when there were only 2 people left, 1 of each team, Ive often seen really good and interesting 1v1s at the end of rounds. It takes real skill and there are no teammates to worry about. I think this would appeal to some people, obviously it did to Concord when he suggested it, I think sine.wav should be interested, pike and me. Thats already 4 people, so I'm trying to be optimistic here. Its fine if you love team fortress, I do as well, but we have the ladle and the FPL and **** knows what else. This is something new, and worth trying imo.

Is 1v1 the ultimate way to test the ability of 2 people or is it just a really egoistical thing to do that actually proves nothing (and can be quite boring)?
I can't decide
Re: 1 vs 1 fort tournament
So in a normal fort match, when there are only 2 people left, they go against eachother and 1 of them wins.. it means nothing?
Re: 1 vs 1 fort tournament
Well in normal fort if it gets down to 1 on 1 then both teams pretty much failed at team work. That said 1 on 1 fortress can be fun, Fortress Onslaught can be fun and a big challenge with only 1 on 1. I'd say a map like that would be the best way to do it, with 1 zone that switches every round maybe make it a smaller map and no re-spawning, tweak the scoring. But ya at the least it would be a nice change of pace from other tournaments.

im down to join but as i see it this should somehow be done with schedule's
Concords 1v1 failed because you had to first ask to 1 v1 then find the player then 1 v 1 then record.
My idea is that we have sign ups and when they are all done we do what they do in ladles and randomize matches. If a player fails to show up to a match then the other player moves on.
If you want to play every one who has singed up then we can randomly make the matches and give everyone a number. In order to move on to quarter finals you must beat 1/3 of the players. Semi finals 1/2 and the finals you must have beat all the players that singed up and you are winner.
Of coarse it is more complex-ed than that but this is just a basic setup
Example of Score keeping
Teen(9) <--- number given
Won / Lost
1 / 4
2 / 5
3 / 6
7 / 12
8
10
11
If you do the math... it shows that with my results i cannot move on to the semi finals because i have not beaten 1/3 of the people.

Re: 1 vs 1 fort tournament
Uh, yeah I can see how it failed there. Your idea sounds good, thanks for the contribution. Lets see what others say.
Re: 1 vs 1 fort tournament
It does mean something, but what it doesn't prove is that the winner is good at fortress, because fortress is way more than 1v1. I myself do like having 1v1s, but a whole tournament about it seems a little boring.Lizmatic wrote:So in a normal fort match, when there are only 2 people left, they go against eachother and 1 of them wins.. it means nothing?
Re: 1 vs 1 fort tournament
What I've found from competitive 1v1s is that no one takes risks and it gets boring very fast.
So if there was a tournament, I wouldn't play.

Re: 1 vs 1 fort tournament
I agree but i would rather see it happen as a league format than a tourny. We get people to sign up and everybody that signs up plays everybody twice: once in each player's choice of server and choice of who attacks/defends first...Teen aka da sex machine aka Player 9 wrote:im down to join but as i see it this should somehow be done with schedule's

Yea finding the opponent you want to play was a mission. Then when you did find them they had an excuse not to play...
I think the system that you can play who ever you want and the fact that there is a ladder makes it so that you can in a way manipulate the matches you play so that you can have a better win/loss record which isn't good.
I don't think this is trying to prove who is good at fortress.Cccorn wrote:It does mean something, but what it doesn't prove is that the winner is good at fortress
Perhaps true but i don' think there is nothing wrong with that...don't they do that in any competition?WonedTwoodThreedFourd wrote:What I've found from competitive 1v1s is that no one takes risks and it gets boring very fast.
Re: 1 vs 1 fort tournament
I don't like a league idea, teen's idea of having a signup and then randomizing who goes against eachother and then do it on 1 day sounds better to me. Then I was thinking of maybe doing only 1 match to keep it exiting and not boring (you don't have to do ANOTHER match afterwards, but you only have 1 try to win) one person defends first, the next round that person attacks, and so on. Not sure how many rounds yet.
Yeah.. no league and finding players on your own, imo it should be a set server and date/time where you play.

Re: 1 vs 1 fort tournament
we could mix it with the fpl...in football there are penalty shootouts, in fortress an 1vs1 would be a simple equivalent.
Re: 1 vs 1 fort tournament
I think if this is going to work it would have to be a 1 day thing, we tried the league and it just fizzled out. If a tourney can work then maybe later on try a league but definitely need to get a 1 day tourney working first.
