team colors in comeptitions

Post by sinewav »

I know this idea will be shot down immediately, but I just want to put it out there:

Teams get to bring their team's color with them to competitions. And, they have "home" and "away" colors, just like your favorite sports teams. Away colors would probably be a very pale version of the normal color, or simply white or gray, or the inverse of home colors, or even something on the cool spectrum if home colors are warm.

Problem #1: What happens when two teams have the same color (or too similar)?
Solution: One team plays with home colors, the other plays with away colors (they should be significantly different).

Problem #2: How do you determine who is home and who is away?
Solution: I don't know.

God knows something like this would never work for a Ladle. However, it might be cool to use if we return to league play this fall (likely). In that case, many of the teams will have their own servers (home and away) and something like team colors is more realistic. Occasional 4-team Fort matches could do this too.

But why change the colors? Because it's fun. Blue and Gold rock, but so do "green and purple", "red and black", and a myriad of other combinations.

OK, flame away. :D

its a step towards the eventual case where we have server defined textures and companies sponsor teams and we sell advertising on cycle walls, just like other sports leagues.

Yeah, it's obvious n00bs will want to use dual-colors for their teams. :P But really, there isn't anything wrong with doing it as long as two opposing teams have trails that are significantly different looking. The problem with dual-colors on a team is this: it's sometimes hard to tell your trail from your mates and this can work against you in a heated attacking/defending situation.

@Concord: Maybe we can try it for the league when it starts? This could be done easily with a resource file, something like "RINCLUDE plushome.cfg" - which might look like this:

Code: Select all

USER_LEVEL sinewav@forums 7 #I don't know how this works actually. :P
TEAM_NAME_1 Plus+
TEAM_RED_1 15
TEAM_GREEN_1 2
TEAM_BLUE_1 2
And the away colors might have a different .cfg with TEAM_NAME_2 or something. Any other team-relevant information can go in the resource. When teams meet, it could clear up a lot of auth confusion too.

Just an idea.

I love this idea, but idk why!! Maybe it's because blue and gold are kinda...stale? This would be kinda hard to do throughout the Ladle since teams would probably be too lazy to make the config's sinewav just posted, but why not at least try and do this in the finals? I'm down!

The lazy admin in me says 'no' to this. It solves a nonexistent problem.

Good idea for league matches.

But will only cause more mess in Ladles.

Ok cool, we'll revisit this when we get ready to have league play again.

Stale is the wrong word. Classic is more like it
