Ladle versus League or Ladder Play

Post by sinewav »

Let's discuss the merits of the Ladle, league play, or possibly a ladder/Ladle combo. We won't have to act on any of this stuff for a while (if ever), but it would be nice to talk about.

Ladle Pro:
It's a single, concise, exciting event with a timing that seems appropriate for everyone. Teams can form spontaneously. It's easy to be involved and takes minimal commitment.

Ladle Con:
As it grows, gets more difficult to complete in a day.

League Pro:
Allows for more teams to play each other, eliminating some of the randomness of the Ladle. The winner here has had a long, tough fight to the top.

League Con:
It takes a lot of commitment and is likely to exclude "open teams" (unless those other teams play a post-season exhibition match against the winners?).

Ladder/Ladle Combo:
I have an idea like this: Individual teams are responsible for organizing matches and moving themselves up the ladder. On a given date, the top 4-8 teams on the ladder have a playoff, which also determines future ladder placement. The cycle continues. Any team getting to the top will be battle-hardened and well deserved of their position. New teams can enter at the bottom.

If there is any other competition format, please add it and I'll edit the name of this thread.

Well the ladle concept could work upon growth if it was splitted by location. Namely US/EU.

That's a short term solution. With number of teams growing it'll bite us sooner or later.

League and Ladles are completely different beings and shouldn't be mixed IMO. Current Ladle format is very simple and is very newbs-friendly.
Since the Ladles are still relatively unknown to most tron players, I think that every round of the tournament (1/8, quarters, semis) should be played at the same time for one simple reason: 8 full servers called "Ladle X sth sth" brings some attention. You see it, and you know that there's something big going on.

edit: Oh, right. A solution? I think playing the tourney on consecutive Sundays should do fine (although it's also short term)

We could also seed...

Also, what would be the motivation for the lower teams to play who know they aren't good enough to make the top 8?

I don't know. I joined a TST knowing I wouldn't make it past the first round. I guess I thought it was fun to play.

It's probably a bad idea. I just wanted to talk about it and see how the community feels.

I think the motivation would be that new/lower teams would to WANT to get into the top 8. That would be enough motivation for me if I weren't ranked amongst the bestest ;-)

The more I think about it, this is probably the best idea. It would keep the event length down, and a play-off between the winners of each Ladle (US/EU) could be played the following week, or whenever they decide (if at all). Maybe if we should split up the challenge board next time and see how it works?

Why dont we just compair the ladle to durka's AFL league?

I didn't participate in it but I used to look over the site all the time when it was still up. IMO the organization of it looked amazing. i could easily navigate from page to page to find whatever i was looking for like rosters, recordings, standings, dates and what not.

The main downfall to a league is commitment...

also it takes place over a long period of time and wouldn't allow new fortress players to participate in it as easily (would have to wait intill next season).

Overall, I support ladles over leagues

the Fall AFL of 2007 was what caused me to join a fortress team to compete in Ladle 13

the AFL and the website look much cooler than the wiki page for the ladle, and are more influential in getting new players to participate

/me agrees 100%

Also, here is a link to "Fortress Premier League" thread where some of this is being discussed. http://forums3.armagetronad.net/viewtop ... 60&t=19366
