I would like to know your opinion - tournament gametypes

Post by Monkey.D.Luffy »

I've seen in blog or forum 'we need to get these clans in the ladle' with a list of clan which are not in the Ladle
The nucleus of Fort players, especially Concord, do their best do have the max of players to do their objectif: get 1000000000 players in the Fortress Cup in the future. I still don't agree that its not a good thing for the game, but, I got attracted by that and i played Fort. After 2 months, my interest to this game-type is like fell :? why? because I'm a CTF player :)

Concord said that the Monkey's method to get more fort players failed. The method of Concord is a success and you get more and more teams each Ladles. But, finally, on all these teams, lot of them are not Fortress players: they are Sumo player, CTF, HR also, or other game-type fan like a 'last man standing'. Armagetron world is big, and each player has his speciality. He discovers what he likes the more and then progress to his favorite game-type.

So i'm wondering, i'snt better to 'do nothing'? I mean maybe some players discovered Fort recently and are now Fortress players, but a lot of teams who will play the ladle will be not really Fort players. Of course, in 'doing nothing' you will have less players, but in the future, maybe more fortress players?

Well, I think all game modes have their place (except HR which is obviously just wrong ;)), so why don't you organize a tournament for the game mode you feel neglected?

I don't see any labels above player names when I kill them on the grid.

"I'm a fort player" is an artificial distinction created by society for its own purpose, just like race, "I'm white"

we're all players in the first case and all humans in the second.

The purpose here, the reason society labels us, is because clans and team captains need a way to distinguish between bad fortress players and inexperienced ones.

I just play, I happen to play mostly fortress because I think it is the most fun. I help organize tournaments for fortress because I also think they are the most fun and the best use of some of my time. I encourage players to play in tournaments because for tournaments to work we need players.

I see, i understand better your actions now, the reason of why you wanted so many players in tourney wasn't clear in my head

@ Z-Man: I have precisely an idea of tourney in my head, if the Multi team CTF server works, i think i will try to make something with some others players. And to be honest I don't know how to attract players in a game that they don't really know, if i have to draw inspiration from what Fort players made or not.

And I'm curious to know Monkey D,
How would you label me?
A mean Fortress player?
A flag-attack slayer?
A high-rubber hater?
A chat-kill taker?

We can label ourselves and others whatever we want. If I were to label myself, I'd probably say "team-game player". This explains why I prefer to play both Fort and CTF over last-man standing.

So maybe team games are my "specialty" and CTF is yours. That probably suits your personality. My personality is more like "jack of all trades". I do lots of things competently, but I'm not a master at anything (except complaining). Of course, there is nothing wrong with fixating on one particular game if that brings you happiness. :)

And regarding the growth of Fortress, I think promotion is good. Fort servers don't have the visibility that other servers have and there are a lot of potentially great fort players who simply have never been exposed to the game. The recent surge in ladle teams due to promotion proves this. Perhaps we have reached a new peak in popularity, but I think there should be periodic promotion of this game type. Besides, I think it is really the only true "team game" in Arma. Even you must agree that team play in CTF is only emphasized during tournaments - most of the time people are just wanking on that server.

Interesting question Monkey D.

And as far as i'm concerned its a false choice, I mean I could be a CTF player, a Fortress player and a Sumo player. Playing in a tournament for one of those does not stop you from playing a tournament for another (Unless of course the dates collide.)

Isn't it just enough to say I am an Armagetron player? And really, who cares if I call myself a ctfer when I enjoy this game type most?

I am also interested in making the cup (I have posted something about it here, http://forums3.armagetronad.net/viewtop ... =2&t=19119) but I think to reduce it on fort mode is the wrong way. You'd need more players who are interested in the whole game. I think a Multi mode tourney (like the sadly forgotten spork) would be more realistic. I know Armagetron is non-commercial and as an open source project it doesn't have a lot of money which can be used for advertisement and marketing. But the new chances the internet offers you are almost infinite. Everyone could contact someone and tell him how much he enjoys this game. It has to happen collective, otherwise it would fail always. The advertisement of open source depends almost on individuals (although I know EA approached you and many linux users know tron only because of their OS). I know Armagetron from school, 6 years ago. We had to analyze newspapers and magazines and of course all boys have chosen the ones that were about video games and contained a CD. On the CD i had, i discovered armagetron (http://www.pcgames.de/?menu=1501&show=i ... _year=2003). I am just an example of how you can catch more attention from those who have never even heard of the game.

All I want to say is: if you really want to do that you'll need more publicity.
