Server Setup/Help.

Post by xRatchet »

Ok, So I am looking into buying servers.

I have a few questions as far as what exactly I'm buying and how I'm going to manage it, so I am going to ask here.

I am going to be buying the 10$ plan from This website: http://www.fsckvps.com

512Mb Plan - Dallas
512MB Guarantee RAM 1Gb Burstable Ram 20GB Disk Space 400GB Transfer approx 600Mhz Guarenteed Dallas Based
$9.95 USD Monthly.

However, when you click order it has some rather confusing questions?

I have no previous experience with this, and so I'm asking:
Hostname:?
NS1 Prefix:?
NS2 Prefix:?
Root Password:?

Username.. I understand that.

OS? That's what it's going to be hosted on right? Which is preferred for armagetron?

And how many Tron servers do you wreckin' would fit on this server without much lag?

Once I buy these servers they will need to know its Armagetron servers? How do I get my servers on that one?

How will I access my files?

Hi,

I set up Ubuntu, and so did smoothice, and durka for our OS. After you purchase the VPS you will see this option to build an ubuntu machine...

Anywho. I constructed a page for me to help me basically set up servers, a dummy could understand it.

Read here: http://vcl-clan.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=885

It's pretty simple when you get the hang of it. You'll need to understand basic UNIX commands to use in PuTTy or any other SSH program. (I also talk about how to set that stuff up in my detailed post about how to set up a server).

Your questions:

Username: duh
NS1: put whatever here
NS2: put whatever here
Root password: will be your main password to login via SSH or SCP.
Cheers,

I know how to set up Ubuntu. I will have to put that downloading tonight, Because I recently got a new computer and have yet to install it.

However, What might be a good SSH Program on Ubuntu, seeing as you only mentioned PuTTy for windows?

I don't know what you mean by "I will have to put that downloading tonight"

You don't have to download ubuntu to put it onto the VPS, unless i am misunderstanding you...

Or

Do you want ubuntu as your main OS on your own computer, since you got a new one?

And you are welcome. I would search google though, for a good SSH program. As I am not familiar with any linux systems. I am windows for life baybay!

Actually I'm using Debian.

I think you can leave the name servers blank, or just put ns1, ns2.

Also, to setup your servers, check out the wiki page about it:

I meant I will have to download the Ubuntu operating System since I lost my old disk.
I plan on having Ubuntu and Windows on my computer. Neither will be dominant.

I am going to set the servers up on Ubuntu though.(Does my computer have to stay running for these servers or no?)

Oh ok, thought you had the same setup as me and smoothice. You must've changed it.

The page on the wiki is outdated. I made mine more simple to understand.

No :) What would be the point of having a dedicated server then?

About ns1 and ns2, those would be the name servers managing a domain you also registered. If you don't have a domain name, leave them blank (and in that case, I don't think the hostname field would do anything.)

A good ssh program for Unix would be 'ssh' :) Whatever comes with it. Usually it's OpenSSH. If you're familiar with PuTTY on Windows, that exists on Unix, too.

No! It's not your main user! It's the root account, which for ***** sake should only be used for sys-adminning purposes.

No he's not, but:
For a limited time, get half off your VPS for as long as you keep it!
It seems it's only just as cheap as fsckVPS "if you keep it." What if I don't "keep it?"

What exactly is the same? My prices are cheaper, and service better (I think smoothice has a story about horrible pings on fsckVPS randomly). Also, it is not currently possible to sublet OpenVZ VPS anyway. While I highly suspect fsckVPS and I share the same datacenter in Georgia, I don't put up latency-inducing firewalls in your way :)

Uh, obviously if/when you stop service, you're not paying anything, half or otherwise...
