im,e sure with a bit of tweaking and stuff i can get most chat clients working well enough on my comp,,to accomadate all newcomers.
teamspeak/skype/ventrilo..already run perfectly well on my setup
what they have on thier comp is entirely their preference
infact these are the very problems and issues we are going to have
for the mentor site..we,ll solve each one as we come to it
lets keep it positive
i just love it

lets get moving on this website

I don't have the skills either, but I feel like I have a good sense of what needs to be going on here, so I can help in that way. And I can help writing the site, too.

Hmm, tell me what you think of the site.

http://vcl-clan.com/arma/

On the intro/logo, I named it Armagetron Dedicated, I think that's a good name for the site, for the Dedicated Players of Armagetron. heh, if you have a better name, I'll change it.

Also with the buttons, I hope to write a script to auto connect to the skype/teamspeak/ventrilo servers just by clicking on it. If not, i will write a page for each button to explain how to connect to the servers.

Code showed me this watering hole you guys are constructing. You know
the internet is a series of tubes and wires. I'll offer my soldering iron if

I noticed this thread because Radian linked to it.

heh. yeah the first impression of armagetron is not "user friendly" and I'm sure "Voice"-Moderators will prove that the grid has a warm and helping community. Which also is good advertisement :D !

What I'd really like to have more feedback on, is what requirements new players have and what's the most difficult barrier to using the game.
(This includes Menus, missing tutorial / single player games etc.)

Current Problems with the menus, can be documented here:
http://wiki.armagetronad.net/index.php?title=Menu

Once the "Voice"-Moderators have a good idea about how to attract, convince new players and what scares them away, we can look at how to change the software (menus) etc. to be more user friendly.

Hint: I don't mind if anyone completes entering the current menu structure as a reference OR provides his or her view on problems.
Please use the wiki for that and not this thread :D. This is about moderators :D good luck.

The reason that I have been trying to push the use of my public teamspeak, falls in line with this discussion. I have heard from many new players of the Xbox live platform, that Gaming sucked until the voice aspect came into play.

My simple thought is this....

If we could get some regular users on TS on a few servers targeted toward n00bs, and then advertise the TS platform on those servers, we could really bring along new players quicker.

In Ww we have been using TS to accelerate training and team development for about 6 months. It has been crucial to the success of out CTF, CTFS, and Ladle Teams. It has allowed us to train n00bs in fortress play, at quite an accelerated pace.

The big advantage of TS is the design that was designed with gamers in mind. I would encourage the community to try my public TS server.
It free!

You can buy a ts server for $0.25 per slot. If you have a VPS that runs Debian/ubuntu, like I do, you can host your own for free!

The public TS address is 65.18.193.127

To get the ts client or server software go to http://www.teamspeak.com/

If you have a Dedicated Server or Virtual Private Server you control and it runs Ubuntu/Debian you can download a binary that is very easy to setup and install. This is probably the easiest server you will ever setup or install!

Just my 2 cents!
Armagetron: It's a video game that people should just play and enjoy :)

Drop the SKYPE and Teamspeak stuff.

Use Mumble! (Open Source: Free :-))

http://mumble.sourceforge.net/Main_Page

I test listened on some french channel :D ... (I don't speak any french).

I guess hosting servers along site Armagetron is easy, and recommending on installing this or even adding a automatic launch feature which connects people to the server seems possible. We'll see.

Linux, Windows and Mac OS X are supported... I can't say anything about the quality though.

personally I like skype the best

the concept of connecting to a person, rather than a server is a very big plus for skype, in my humble opinion.

Hey, Mumble makes it easy to add positional audio support. You just have to plug some data into a shared memory bit. This is something I can see us support directly.

I'm not sure we want *just* positional audio support. Positional for general chat, certainly.

However, I'm thinking teamchat should be somewhere else, like maybe confined to the left speaker, and private chat confined to the right.

But we can probably work something out. We can control mumble with DBUS also, so we can probably have the server start up the mumble process, and also have the client start up the client. Maybe there's enough control there for us to use our own keybinds to control the mumble client?

Edit: I think supporting murmur would be better than building out own. This is why: http://mumble.sourceforge.net/slice/Murmur/Server.html That uses ICE, an RPC interface. With that, we could theoretically host a community murmur server, or someone else could volunteer to host one, and then we can make it easy for servers to connect to it. That would allow people who have limited bandwidth arma servers to still provide voice chat by using the community server.

We should fork this part of the discussion if we're going to talk about it more.

great I'll add a feature entry in launchpad then ?

Mumble support for Armagetron. :D

I vote to keep the support optional. Some people don't like additional "bloat" if they don't have a headset.
