Radians skype mentor programme

The applications that skype can be put to is left only to our imaginations
When i first started playing armagetron..the only help was from those individuals
kind enough to explain how i should be playing by typing on screen--and the community was relatively small
however--the community has grown massively scince then --servers--maps--game modes--clans--teams--individuals

so what happens when newbies first discover armagetron ?
they get on the forums--download the client-and off they go into the various servers
only to bet met ..not by the reletively small helpfull dedicated bunch i was met by
but by furious team mates or players-calling them nooobs (and worse)
and being told to ( go read the fricking rules on the wiki you noob )

This is not a friendly face of armagetron / but a very offputting expirience (especially for girls)
who may be young and rather sensitive to such a brash attitude......so what do a lot of em do
They go to add & remove programmes and delete armagetron off thier computers
without ever knowing just how fantastic this game and community really is
all because of that first impression

the growing popularity of direct chat clients sudgests that gamers already have headsets or mics set up on thier comps
what if they were first told to find a skype mentor
an experienced player they could talk to directly who would--(without having to type)

welcome them to the fantastic game of armagetron
show and explain the basic principles of play--and moral code
explain the different game modes and various forms of play relating to it
let them know that (you are there for them until they have found there feet)

and explain the settings menu--which in my viiew is a horribly complex layout for newbies
i believe that none would ever delete arma from thier computers but stay and
discover for themselfs just how amasing this game truly is---and this is what i aim to achieve

of course i would love it if plus were the pioneers of this project -
and my aim is to give newcomers that all important--good first impression
and ultimatly to get to that magic moment when we have enough players playing arma
to roll out the CUP

i think their should be a place on the main arma site for this to work
Radian and 2020 will personally vet applicants--

(NOTE)- all skype mentors must have a high moral code (no swearing--be friendly-patient and polite)
If you think you have what it takes to be a skype mentor put your name below

Radian ( plus-Radian )
2020 (tronic2020)
noobSaibot (MrNick1)

The moderators on the arma forums have made it clear at how frustrating it is to answer endless posts
from players and newbies on questions that are explained in detail on the wiki and forums
Skype-mentors could easily answer questions/or direct them to where they need to look
this would also cut down the amount of needless posts on the forums
im,e hoping to get 10 experienced players signed up or more so that at any given time there is a skype mentor online--and this could be seen..rather like the who,s playing in the servers list
i just love it

I really think a lot of this "TRONIC" stuff should be on another site, dedicated to the growth of Arma and Fortress. I worry that all this stuff will just overload armagetronad.net when really it should be "us" who sees our ideas through. Unfortunately I have only rudimentary web development skills otherwise I would be all over it. I feel like everyone here already has a full plate.

Awesome idea radian, you are really impressing me with all these idea's lately. I would have to download skype, because all I have is Team Speak :P None the less, I would be happy to help and could possibly even set us up a website. Some of my web work can be found on my site vcl-clan.com

Keep up the good work radian making tron grow =)

I think sinewav is right. This is an excellent idea to start another community site. Not a community built around a clan or a server, but around helping new people. Create it. Add it to google and yahoo. Put a link in your signature. Put a link in the wiki. I'll put a link on the links page. We'll do a news item on it. Talk to angel and get a link on armagetron.co.uk. Talk to clans. Shout from roof tops in your local area.

It's just a bit too much to add onto here. I think you could get some real momentum going if you even get another 2 people really willing to do this.

Yea this really is a great idea and my personal experience using Skype while playing tron has been amazing and really it brings a whole different dimension to the game. Talking to the people you are playing with is very amusing and really makes the game a lot more fun. As far as it helping new players, great idea, as long as they are willing to get on it. It would be very easy to explain to them settings, game play, and what have you. keep in mind some "kids" are a bit younger though

Seems like it would be just as easy to have a separate TeamSpeak section too. And for that matter, any other VoIP software that a mentor might use.

I think an alternative site is the ticket. I remember sites like AngelTron and iceman's being really helpful to me when I first started. But now ideas have changed, goals have changed, so it's probably best to come up with a tool better suited for that job - something that can handle a scaleable tournament system too.

Anyone got a good name for a website? :goatee:
