We are talking about establishing a new comp that involves money. We are not talking about trying to get money involved in every touny that already exists.
Obviously, I was using the ladle as an example.
& having accounts like on other games would mean no imposters, I guess if money was invloved & someone was playing as someone else it would be fraud? lol. Don't see how armathentication could be used since you could just use/create a different authority maybe

hm & since the game is free...z-man what's your stance on playing it for money? :D

i'm not necessarily being negative either, wouldn't have bothered posting otherwise

Also for a relatively simple game (fortress) it's quite variable imo..would make for some good betting :P

Funding can be done from money each competitior puts in.
Each person paypals 5 dollars to an account. Set the max limit to 48, randomly assign 12 people to one of 4 sumo servers. Top 3 people from each server advance to final server. You don't show? Sucks for you.. Winner takes 65% 2nd place gets 25%, organizer gets 10%

Nice idea. Only 2 of 48 players will win ANYTHING. The rest can go f*** themselves. Can't imagine 48 suckers that will take part in such competiton. There are hundreds better ideas to spend 5 bucks.

How about something with less risk? 3rd and 4th place get their entry fees back, 2nd place gets double the fee, and 1st place gets the rest. (This after the organizer gets their share of course.) The payoff isn't as good, but still worth it for everyone. I would definitely join a competition if I only had to beat one person/team to break even.

In fact, I would be willing to organize such a thing if we could find a way to manage the funds in an easy and transparent way.

Code: Select all

a= entry fee

Still no good. Rules like: "winner takes all" or "best 4 get the win" or anything like that are s**t and slowly kill the spirit of the game. It turns a-tron into gambling like poker or roulette - it's no fun, just money.

The only money competition I could accept would be some official world- or euro-cup tournament. Something that involves whole tron community. Not just few folks that are in clans or care to check forums once in a while.

The best way would be to make such a tournament, with let's say 8-10 competitions (sumo, fortress, styball, low rubber, high rubber, etc.) and then involve money if it works and people get interested. Such tournies are great thing to popularise the game, and if more and more people start playing tron, it's better for the idea of money-comp. If it would be something like Ladle-with-money-involved no one would really care. And some folks who lost their 5$ would probably think twice before taking part in such competition next time.

Strange, I didn't agree with anything you just said. This game is already fun; money won't kill it. Money would just make the game interesting on a different level for those who are into such a thing. And how would you expect a massive "world tournament" for money if there was never a starting point like this? If you are totally against the idea maybe you should contribute something more than speculation, because seriously, you don't have to play if you don't want to. I hardly think a friendly wager would "kill the spirit of the game"... it wouldn't for me anyway.

Since when is poker or roulette not fun? Why do so many people play these games? I disagree with your whole statement. Money would make things a lot more interesting, and to me, it would be more fun if someone could devise a safe way to do it.

These days most tournaments are sponsored, and rarely any players lose everything they put into such event. Such competitions give profits not only for them, but also for the game itself - and intertest from more and more players is what armagetron needs.

I mean, what's the point in making competition that only few people will benefit from? I can't see why playing tron for money would be so much fun. Yes, some guys who can afford losing few bucks will say it's more exciting, but this doesn't take game into next - more professional - level. What you're talking about is something like poker party on friday evening with some beers and ca$h involved. You can do that any time, and I can't do nothing against it.

It just doesn't make sense to me. I always thought that with every competition, we should make the game expand in a way that will transform it into online giant like starcraft or quake (or one of 2020's ideas :)), that's why I'm not really interested in such "friendly wager".
