Wild West Sumo

Post by apparition »

What is not acceptable here? I'm ******* sick of getting banned for having a "potty mouth" or "be more mature" when I say things like, "stfu" or "gtfo" to whatup who just happened to be catching up on me in the 9th round at wwsumo.

Now, I realize some people are old and shit and don't want the little ones to read curses. I've definitely stopped saying shit and **** a lot since the ww mindless droogs have been banning me, but this is getting ridiculous. Some people don't get kicked. Sometimes no one is "monitoring" the server (do something better with your life!). But the real problem is that there are three tronners who play at my apartment (Owl, regiT, and I) who get banned constantly, randomly, and without much reason since admins and ww has gotten all nazi-shithead on us lately. regiT gets crazy sometimes, and got banned for saying "jizz" but he was banned for 69 DAYS! So his ass has to drop in on our wireless and play. This is excessive. There are much more effective ways to handle this situation.

There are a few better options for people who have slips of the tongue that would be just as effective:
° admin_silence
° kick w/ message
° I know there's a way to auto kick when you use someone else's name (I tried making Durka last summer in WW and was auto kicked). I changed my name back and went back in and haven't tried it since. Is there a way to have an auto kick for specific words (shit, ****, etc.)?

You know, people are really uptight in tron for some reason. In all the other online games I've played, everyone bitches at each other and says funny shit for no reason and we have a good time. Since certain people pay to have servers (not Destiny) and others are there to "run" them (which defeats the purpose of having voting systems/silence features), they can run their servers however they want, but they need to make it more explicit then. If I'm gonna handle myself responsibly, let's expect the same from the people who have the power in a server. Let's teach ourselves how to respectfully handle crazy asses. If I'm one of those crazy asses, so be it. I'd rather be crazy and free than full of shit and irritable.

And yes, I used profanity in this message to make a point that it CAN be excessive and annoying, but a little stfu or gtfo or wtf every now and then hurts NO ONE.

If that was your goal, you could have done a lot better.

How they choose to run their servers is up to the server administrator, it might not hurt anyone, but that's not the point. Your aware of the rules, so play by them or go elsewhere. There are plenty of sumo servers :).
edit: Oh right you understood that :), sorry, clearer rules might be handy. Hmm... and auto-kick on words, you should be warned first, even so people will come up with work arounds.

I disagree with ADMIN_SILENCE however, I don't think it's a solution. It just makes an angry person more angry, when you want to make angry people call off and relax.

Wild West do not state their policy anywhere on their servers. Most people that play on Wild West do not visit their forums. Many people do now know about the no swearing rule but they need to actually put their policy on the servers like the people that run most other servers do (if they have a policy). Unfortunately, there are no real alternatives to Wild West, when it comes to American sumo and fortress servers.

Yeah, Wild West admins are completely out of control. It's totally insane. People get kicked for no reason at all and others seem immune to their ridiculous ad hoc server policies, which are ill-defined to begin with. During a recent forum discussion, I suggested several ways to "reform" the Wild West servers, but as usual Destiny steps in, says something vague and trite, then locks the forum. She complains about the complaints, then does nothing to correct the situation. Total mismanagement. Wild West has become a colossal joke to Arma and will surely be abandoned as soon as someone decides to offer the same services.

People have been offering (North American) alternatives to Wild West for ages. It's just that people prefer the Ww servers anyway. There are plenty of other options to choose, but the people choose Ww.

ya i experimented with that on CTWF a few times. it lead to name changing and once that got locked they would leave and come back settings cleared and I'd have to start over again :P

That is not really true from what I have seen. Only Wild West have offered permanent fortress and sumo servers in North America, for any noteworthy length of time.

As far as current alternatives go, looking at the master list now, we have:

Servers that are, kind of, alternatives:

1) Twisted Rats Multimode - I guess fortress and sumo but only one at a time.

Servers that may look like alternatives but aren't:

1) Compugene's Playground: Fortress mode - Maybe multimode. Must be very recent because Compugene is new to Armagetron. He is a regular on the Wild West forums and agrees with the Wild West policy.

2) fg fallen gods arena sumoplay - It says that it is classic sumo but it's not any kind of sumo at all.

3) Dest!Ny's sumo treasure island

Look what I found (rather suspiciously because I'm sure that these weren't there before):

1) Pink Tomatoes fortress server
2) Pink Tomatoes sumo server

So Pink, are you going to keep these up permanently? If you do then...

Monkey, they are permanently up now. During the tourneys I closed down most of the servers, then went to bed, and forget to turn them back on :).

All the other servers that I thought were alternatives are in the "not really alternatives list". I was sure there were more, but like you said they were not online for a lengthy period of time.

That's definitely what I'm asking. If Armagetron is going to have clean/dirty servers, I'd like to see some systematic changes to the way each server rules are presented and enforced. Us troublemakers want to be handled effectively and predictably.

It would be nice to see some sort of automatic, unbiased server administration. Harassment is one thing, but isn't there some sort of script or something that could be integrated that would change any "F" words to **** the way it is on here?

Automatic warning system? It would be much like the spam filter that most servers have. If you say the "F" word, it either a) disables your speech for ## seconds, b) warns you that you're one "F" word away from getting banned for ## minutes, or c) kill/suspend/kick/bans you automatically...

Destiny told me that she has had recent problems with over-zealous administrators, which just goes to say that you can't rely on humans to do a bot's job.

Many new people who discover Tron are just bored and want to cause trouble. And I realize respectful playing/administration isn't a problem for people with clean vocab and no desire to goof off and create silly fights. The fact is that arguments, rivalries, and frustration are all part of the game. In continuing the process of building up the game, this could be a useful thing to consider reconstructing.

Rather than displaying the rude message and then displaying a "Hey you shouldn't say that here", why not just drop the message completely?, no need to warn, no one else will hear it.

edit: appa suggested the same... hmm... on further thought people will likely be doing |= etc.

Pink Tomatoes Sumo FTW! Now, there is just the matter of replacing the ultra-popular CTF... I thought about doing it myself, but I don't know if I can afford it. :(

I did have CTF and CTFS servers before, but I think fort and sumo are a higher priority :).

edit: prefer team sumo or solo sumo? possibly I could alternate it :).
