Vista Problems

Post by Carnage »

Hi. On my new computer I have Vista Home Premium. I installed Armagetron and tried to enter an internet game but the screen went blank, and when I tried to close it, the screen went white. I had to shut down the computer with it still running. Anyone know a reason for this happening?

If it counts for anything I believe this is the correct info:

AMD Phenom 9100e Quad-Core Processor, 4.0Gb Ram, NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430

I installed this version: armagetronad-0.2.8_alpha20080308.gcc.win32

This version worked well on my old computer with Microsoft XP.

I've tried Arma on Vista too, with my housemate's comp. It was slow (5-30 fps), crashy, too much problems to remind now. I just forgot that experience.
I guessed that Arma needs to be compiled for Vista, doesn't it?

Do you have the graphics card drivers from your manufacturer? The ones that come with Vista do not have proper OpenGL support, which Armagetron requires.

Eh, I didn't do much yet it solved itself. It works now. :?

On an unrelated note, I turned off V-Sync and the details, yet I still don't get the fps i used, and the graphics are a bit choppy. Any suggestions?

No. Windows versions are generally binary compatible. Problems arise when programs call system functions in a way that works for an old version, but not for the new one (usually when they rely on undocumented behavior), and in that case, recompiling would not help.

Also, if you have to shut down the computer, it's never the fault of the application. In most cases, it's the fault of a driver, less frequently the hardware itself, and even less frequently the operating system. Since in this case, the error was triggered on the first connection to the internet, it may have been caused by a popup from the firewall component triggering a driver error.

Yea, I'll just have to get a copy of Windows Xp if i decide to play again.

Is it possible to allow Armagetron to use Direct3D?

Blimey. I was reading an article that said Microsoft wasn't going to use any resources to change the method OpenGl is used in Vista, but it would help programs get from using OpenGl to Direct3d, or something similar to that.

 Eh, didn't know how to quote two posts; the first sentence felt like it needed to be separated from the rest, seeing how it was unrelated.

Won't happen again, Sir!

One of the aims in armagetronad is it being multi-platform
direct3d only works on windows(and still..you gotta have to be up-to-date) and xbox
considering armagetronad currently runs (quite) fine on windows, linux, OSX, and even FreeBSD, that would be a HUGE step backwards

Ah, thanks for clearing it up for me. I'll just install XP if I'm gonna play. :)
