This is my dilemma, i could paint it but that i think would ruin the whole idea of making it out of wood. I could stain it and then give it a nice coat of varnish. Or i could use it as a mold and make a bunch of them that then i would paint. What are your thoughts?

use it as a mold :D. then again it will be a pain in the butt to do that. I remember our supermilage car. chucking the foam out of it for a few days.

what size wood did you start with a 6x6 or an 8x8 ?

Linden wood, its a common wood used for sculpting.

The blank was 12"x6"x3". i moded the design a little to fit my idea of what it should look like. I always thought that it would look better with a wider rear wheel and stream lined the side panels so that it would look more modern.

Good point with the varnish. Maybe if you can get it all smoothed out, black windows and then a light (ie mostly transparent) varnish over the whole thing. Seeing the grain would be pretty cool.

I'd like to point out that you could stain it and still have it look painted. Stains are available in pretty much any colour, so staining it red, black and white, or even blue would be fairly easy.
I'll mention before you do that though, stain it only if the grain looks nice before you stain. If it's not a nice grain, or a wood that stains evenly, (never worked with linden wood) it wont look very good in the end. And you'd be better off either painting or molding.
I suppose using it as a mold could make you some money here on the forums if it looks good enough. :D

Thnx for the suggestions. I have been working with wood for a few years now and have found that most woods look better either stained or natural. The only issue with colored stains it that it gives the piece an unnatural look. Ill post some more pics as the project moves along, lets see how it looks when its done and then i can do some color test on some scraps.

What better for a light cycle than an unnatural look?
