Code: Select all

Neutrino
Yep, that's over 15 letters, weird.

O god, I hope you're not talking about those DWH guys. Thank god they're gone.

I suggest to at least make the limit actually 15 characters. Currently it is 15 bytes. Even if colour codes are considered unsupported, this byte=character assumption will still be a problem when/if wrtl's UTF-8 support finally gets merged.

Yep, basically; except that color codes, unlike UTF8, are not designed to be parseable back-to-front, which makes removal of excess codes at the end of a string is only possible if you parse it completely. That and other cans of worms and the fact that color coded names are plainly annoying will make me keep the stance of not officially supporting them.

My point was that the limit needs to be adjusted for 15 characters anyway, not whether colour codes should or shouldn't be supported. I don't see how back-to-front parsing is useful for this.

P.S. What is annoying about a single colour code in front of a name?

It's how your mind works while scanning various lists and tables that contain names. Different colors aren't just distracting, they significant reduce your ability to efficiently scan the list. Other players making my software harder to use is unacceptable to me. It's like someone changing the colors and fonts in the menu items in your word processor or something.

I would be interested in a feature that strips colors all the time, and has an appropriate place for people to customize their names like that, like a player profile or something. Failing that, I'd just get rid of the damn things, if it were me.

Ah, well I believe we already filter colour codes in such lists.

Most IRC clients apply calculated consistent colours to people's names, because in the context of a chat it can assist in identifying the speaker without reading their name each time. Likewise, Armagetron also will apply colours to names based on the cycle colour, only in the context of chat. I personally think it is reasonable to allow someone who uses the overflow bug to get a green cycle with purple trails to also have a green name in chat.

The color overflow bug is a bug and is just as unsupported as color codes in names or chat, both are merely tolerated because some people think they are fun and because they are usually harmless (team mode being the exception). If you exploit them and there are undesired side effects (name and cycle color not matching, or your name only being allowed to have seven real characters), then that is your problem.
