What do you want to see in Armagetron soon? Any new feature ideas? Let's ponder these ground breaking ideas...

IBM BE Cell CPU build (PPC Linux) for the PS3!

Post by WallyWallWhackr »

:D It's all right there in the title, folks! I have an awesome Yellow Dog install on my PS3, and if the source can be compiled for the PPC. I need one of you fine folks to let me know.
Otherwise, what differences in the source would be need to cross compile or directly compile this game on my PPC driven PS3?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
This machine SCREAMS! It is like ten times faster than a PC. Likely a lot faster than the MAC G5 as well.

Wally awaits... :D

As long as it has all the necessary development libraries installed and GCC, it should compile. The real question here is what sort of 3D acceleration is available under Linux. If you get it working you'll have to say what sort of performance you get.

Well, the cell CPU, PS3 and the graphics card add up to a mcahine that is ten times faster than a modern PC, so I do not see where it would pose a problem in that arena. I just thought that someone might alredy have some experience with the PPC or CELL platform, and was curious as to their meanderings.
ASCII ya later!

To the best of my knowledge, DRI wasn't available under linux on the PlayStation because drivers were not released for the proprietary graphics chipset.

It's worse: the PS3 Linux runs in a hypervisor that prevents access to the graphics hardware. So you're stuck with the Cell for rendering graphics. It is theoretically possible to get good performance anyway and last I heard there was a modified version of Mesa that uses the Cell's coprocessors (can't remember how they are called) for acceleration, but it will not beat a decent PC with a good GPU that way.
