Pocket PC, PalmOS...........What do you think?

Post by Seeker »

Just tossing out an idea.

Tron on a PDA has been done before, but I feel that with PDS's gaining VGA screens, faster processors, and more memory it may be time to attempt a port of a 3D tron game to PDA. I know microsoft is offering a devel. kit for Windows mobile 2003, including a 60 day trial of visual studio .net pro for free. i dont know ho hard it would be to port c++ to the language used in PDA software, but MS is offering all the tools and SDK's FOR FREE!!!!!!!!!!! why not try?

:?: Microsofts Offer :?:

Crimson Fields runs on WindowsCE computers. As far as I know, all you need is an SDL port for the target OS and you've got it.

I would suggest that a 2d, top-down version (like what we had before 3d gaming) would be better, and focus on making it work over the network instead of having a wild 3d gaming experience. Theoretically trivial, since it's just a matter of making the existing network code work.

Anyway, for PalmOS, there is a GCC-based development kit already available. But I can guarantee that my little Clie won't play 3d Tron, and my next PDA won't be Windows-based either. On the flip side, carrying Tron on your PDA is a lot like carrying a chamber pipe, it serves to satisfy your addiction in a portable fashion....

well im thinking along the lines of a very stripped down client.

alot of the pda's i have looked at have built in wifi and/or bluetooth, or can get an SDIO card for it, so networking "should" be straight forward.

the only thing i am worried about is 3d......if i can limit things like the game resolution and effects like chat and console commands i may be ok.

I think player setup would be one human only and up to 2 ai players, and all setup would be through the config files(or a small gui with menus????)

OH well, ill think it out a bit more and see what i can come up with as time goes by.

quick serch came up with... http://arisme.free.fr/ports/SDL.php

and as for stripping down a client... modern ppc's (x50, a730, etc.) should be able to run a normal client no problem... i know ppc->pc specs arent comprable, but the axim with 624mhz and hardware acceleration couldnt run much worst than my box that i used to play tron on.
