You can run run armagetron-dedicated from any given directory assuming it meets the directory layout thingies, ie, the var directory and the etc directory and the language directories are there.

The tech said you were in a 'jailed' environment. This means it's not possible for you to install anything that would be common to all. No one else will be able to run (or access) your stuff either. You basically be installing into *your own* /usr/games/bin dir.

These guys sound quite accommodating actually. I'd go with them. Their willingness to open ports etc. is a very good sign. They aren't blowing you off. I say go for it. Try and install it. If you hit problems, you know where to come.

If you compile it on your own you dont even need to run make install, ./configure and make will suffice and you can run it from the directory you compiled it in.

just remember that chrooted environments often don't have very much they can run. rpm is often not there, along with just about everything else useful. this might not be a cake walk. it may, in fact, be a a sludgy cake slide.

Tool wise, it seems to have all you need. A shell, gcc, access to the logs, access to the cron-tables (scheduling a job to check once in a while if the server is running for example) and 26 (25 + 1 hehe) emails.

But dont trust me, I'm not running any server, so I dont know what you TRULY need.

Also, could the sysadmin around tell us what kind of traffic (daily/montly) they get on their services? That would be of use.

hmmm... I measured the bandwith usage once upon a time... it's quite low... I used I think 20-100mb/day (up & down combined) for a 6 player server, depending on usage... Maybe my upper # is a bit high, it's all a little fuzzy...
