System lag?

Post by brwyatt »

I currently run Windows Vista Ultimate (32 bit) on my AMX Althlon 64 X2 Socket AM2 4200+ (2.21 GHz), 2 gig OCZ DDR2, nVidia 7900GT machine, but yet I can only get around 9 FPS? and that isn't even with all the nifty features turned on.... I know I may be using the beta version (0.3.X) but that shouldn't be a problem in this case, would it? Ill try 0.2.8.1, but I doubt it will make a diff.

EDIT: 0.2.8.1 is the same. In fact, higher graphics are taking up more CPU than they should. shouldn't it be using the graphics card? I can play Battlefield 2142 on just below the highest settings with no problem, why can't i even get close on a game that doesnt require as much horse power?

It's a common Vista problem; your OpenGL driver probably does not support hardware acceleration. Can you post a dxdiag dump and your user.cfg file? The rest of the thread in the link probably is relevant to you, too.

Cant find my user.cfg.... i know that it is under "%user%/application data" folder on XP, but on Vista, the start menu link seems to point to the empty folder "C:\ProgramData\Armagetron".

however, I do have my dxdiag (attached).

thanx for the help...

I put everything on bilinear and am using flush instead of finish... textured plane for the floor (not dual) and no mirror... ive turnned off the eye candy, while still keeping atleast some sort of environment...but still around 9 FPS

(again, using 0.3.x)

One of the best ways of increasing framerate with a software renderer is decreasing resolution. When I was forced to use one on an old machine I used 320x200 and turned off all textures. I used "just grid" to get a better feel of motion than with no floor at all. But that was with a single CPU in the 300 MHz range, not a dual core at 2.2 GHz; you can place the bar higher.

Yeah, all the fine tuning won't help you much if OpenGL is not hardware accelerated, your once expensive graphics card is pretty much useless then. DxDiag says your driver is rather old, it's from last year and only very recent ones support OpenGL. Go here for 32 bit drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_100.65.html
or here for 64 bit drivers (you haven't told us which Vista version you're running, so I'm giving you both links).
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_100.65.html

There also seem to be newer beta drivers available, but the 100.x series fully support OpenGL, so you should be fine with them. You may need to uninstall your current driver before you install the new one.

I don't think we need user.cfg any more, but yeah, Vista moved some stuff around. I think it should be in C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Armagetron now. We only need to see it if the new drivers don't solve the problem.

Well, Im using the drivers that came with Vista... maybe that is why it isnt supported? lol

thanx guys!

I was always just to lazy to get the official nVida drivers (usualy only played directx games) but i guess i got a reason now huh?

thanx again...

So in summary (for others who may have this problem): If you have windows vista, the windows drivers don't support hardware opengl, so install manufacturer drivers...

Thanx again!

It looks like arma won't support changing your vsync setting until the next 0.3 release (which is overdue by half a year).

Going offtopic...

I just managed to get myself scheduled for 36 hours at the school, which means I'll be working about 4-6 hours a week, and finding something else to do (while getting paid!) for the other 30-32 hours. Maybe that sound engine will finally get done...
