Those who like Armagetron because it is loosely based on a cool 80's film may like the following game, too:
DEFCON: everybody dies. It's Windows only currently, but Linux and Mac versions are in preparation. There's a demo, but the full game is cheap enough to count as almost free.
This one is derived from "War Games". It's Global Thermonuclear War, presented in the cold blodded view like on the control monitors in your favorite imaginary command bunker. You command a sea fleet of submarines to blow up other ships or launch nukes, carriers to launch airplanes or hunt submarines, destroyers to shoot at other ships and airplanes (not submarines, note that in order to be interesting, realism is not part of the game). Airplanes are bombers with nukes and conventional bombs against ships or fighters for scouting and killing defenseless bombers. You see, rock-paper-scisors all the way :) In the beginning, you also place stationary airfields, radar stations and, of course, missle silos. Another wildly unrealistic, but fun, twist is that silos can either be in air defense mode where they shoot down planes and incoming nukes or in nuke launch mode, and every mode switch takes enough time that you're pretty much defenseless while you launch from your silos. It's a neat game if you see it as an abstract thing, and deeply disturbing if you let the scenario get to you.

There are some catches. First, if you're playing to win and not to watch your navy ripped to shreds and your cities leveled to the ground, you have to micromanage a lot. You need to time your nuke launches, often more than 40 almost at once, to hit the targets almost simultaneously to overwhelm the air defense. You need to keep a constant eye on your fighters, they have very little fuel and tend to crash if you don't manually order them to land. You need to keep your bombers out of the range of the destroyers.

It's a bit hard to find partners to play with: EVERY game appears on their master server list, even local ones where someone just wants to test the AI. There are no dedicated servers, so the server runs on some random player's machine, and without port forwarding, that doesn't work, so you get tons of timeouts. And when you finally found a game and start playing, the other guy quits when you've send his navy to the bottom of the sea and melted his silos, and of course if the quitter ran the server, it's game over. Happened on all three games against real people I've had so far. Grr. So, if anyone from here want's to play against me, I'll be on our IRC channel (#armagetron on freenode) when I'm looking for a partner. In DEFCON, I'm the "Covered Duck" :)

Haha its a great game. I preordered it off of steam 3 weeks before the release. It's pretty fun. I also convinced a few arma players to start playing it as well :D

i did notice the word
tournament
prominantly displayed on the forum
even though they have just brought the game out

might be an idea...

Darwinia was a good demo, not really worth buying.

You mean, like
"The free demo was promising, but the full game did not meet my expectations"
or
"The program is a nice demo/toy, but not a good game (sort of like Black&White)"
? I ask because I really liked the free demo :)

I don't fully know yet, but I think I'm out of Defcon already again. The problem is that if I have the choice between doing A: something boring that makes me win and B: doing something fun that may make me lose, I choose A. In shooters and single player RPGs that allow it, I pick out one enemy at a time, lure it away from the rest, and fight it alone, instead of hurling myself into the fray. In Defcon, I micromanage until my clicking finger falls off. And I'm probably too slow for speed defcon (don't know, I was waiting for my credit card to arrive and couldn't buy the full game yet).

Oh, and all my opponents except one really sucked. Or were using interesting strategies that failed against my "put my navy into one spot, wipe out most of his navy right at the start, don't worry too much about the rest of it" boring strategy. Now that I think of it, the only non-sucking opponent did the same thing, and was a little better than me at it :) Yeah, that's 1 vs 1, I know more players make a game more interesting.

Aww, bought Defcon anyway. In games with more players (which you really don't get that often playing the demo) the focus goes away from the micromanagement and shifts to more interesting problems: who do I hit with what now and when will I betray my ally? It's considerably more fun, although of course it means that pure skill does not make you win, it always depends on how the others team up. Fun enough to be worth the money for me.

Heh, they were having the same cross platform float issues we have with the debug recording, only that they didn't expect it and relied on calculations to be the same on every computer, or else the game breaks. So now they had to redo everything to use fixed point math.

Yeah, saw it :D

Still won't buy it until there's some servers using a compatible version, but it looks nice, though a bit crappy without antialiasing and with a framerate of some 2Bq…
