As far as i know, 2020 your aim is to promote the game right? So we have more players and publicity etc.

I was just wondering though, how much bigger would you want the game to get?

I only say this because as much as it would be good for the game to get really popular, it might actually destroy the community thats here already. Just wondered what u actually think.

I can't see how the game could keep its openess and self organisation with tournaments, if it actually had a million players.

Not that i'm a critic, greenlighted :D

to do this self-organised thing
we need respect between players...

my guess is
things will collapse unless respect is engendered

an organic system has a chance of exponential growth
while a centralised system might collapse due to undue stresses to control people

i don't think it is something to worry about...
at least
not any time soon... :)

btw
remember that idea i had about interviews...?
i'd like to try that sometime

to repel newbies is the first step to get a collapse. and this is what we usually do. no surprise if day by day we see them self organizing else where, building a new server everyday with no player in it. nobody in fortress, only because few old veterans experienced players don't have time to waste training stupid noobs. in fact everyone is so concentrated to himself that the best game to play is sumo. sumo kills team play, i say. sumo kills team play.
and now we are so detached and so confused to be afraid of new players coming, how funny. if we were a community we wouldn't be afraid.

Gotta say that a server filled with (a bit more advanced) newbies is the right place to go if you want to get kicked. For example on CTF, if you're the only guy who knows that it's more important to def if it's 1vmany than it is to respawn (giving them 3 points + getting points for whoever you kill vs giving them 4), you can't even do the calculation for them and tell them, they won't listen. Happened to me more than once.

we have been in agreement for at least half a year
rain

sumo has increased the skill levels of players
and now the gap between regular fort players and noobs is huge

there have always been suggestions to get new players in
because joining an active fort server is often too difficult
and during ladles
curious players are often dealt with curtly because we can't enforce spectator mode

1
i think we need to get a team of players who are interested in cracking this problem
and we need to get together
to chat and come up with some suggestions to offer to the community
and this can't just be me and rain...

2
i still think the personal touch is required...
when anarchic wanderers was one of the strongest teams about
it disbanded with the intention of each player starting new teams
with new additions coming from other high-rubber servers
and completely new players...

this problem is becoming critical
at least for the fort community

that is what im saying. they didnt find help, so they self organized. and now they play with rules they drew out from low experience in game. they have no reason to pay attention to us as long as we didn't pay attention to them.

2020:
1) im up for a team of voluntary trainers.
2) incam tournament could be a good occasion.

There's also the problem of people just not playing that much fortress anymore. The crowd is reasonable during the weekends, but it's mostly empty the other nights. A year ago you had so many people playing fortress every single night, you were bound to get more new people.
It's not like people don't like to play fortress, but imho it only get's 'good' if you have at least 10 players.

2020: I like the idea of having some kind of meeting to see if we can somehow crack the problem of getting more people. If you set a date and time, I'll try to be there. It might be a good idea to have some kind of agenda.

Maybe we should split this topic?

being one, I'll try and provide you with a newb point of view.

about 2 weeks ago, (after finally getting back into arma) I joined a random online game, and was killed by reasons I didn't understand several times in a row. Only later, I realised that unlike single player arma (out of the box arma), is completely differant than online play.

my suggestions:

1) have 'newbie zone' games, that long-suffering advanced players will take turns showing new players like myself exactly what a 'fortress' game is (i still don't know!)

2) pack some other levels with arma when it's downloaded, that are more like online play. this might have to include specialized ai so new players (who, for the most part will play single before online) will kinda get a feel for it.

3) have a newbie forum so new users don't have to feel stupid asking "what's a fortress game?". *NOTE* this could backfire if normal users didn't go there enough!!! this would take commitment!! otherwise they'd form their own sub-community.

How about putting together some very nicely made videos that explain different aspects of the game like:

1. Player Setup (Double Binding/Glancing/Colors)
2. Internet Games
3. Low/Medium/High Rubber
4. CTF
5. Fortress/Sumo/Team Sumo/Wild Fortress

If these were included into the package (probably would take up too much space though, so maybe just a text file with links to these would be good) when I had gotten Armagetron, then I definately would've been able to learn the game faster.

[rant]IMO if you tell a noob how to double bind, you really are hurting them.

e.g. sagelord brought his friend bamboy to tron, told him how to double bind, and basically taught him the rules and such. that didn't help bamboy, as he got away with slower reflexes. therefore it takes longer for him to start getting good.

so basically, if you see a noob who hasnt played for 2 weeks, dont tell them how to double bind! [/rant]
He'll bite your head off!
Maybe if we all go in and catch him off guard...
RETREAT!

[counter rant]hmmm... imho any computer-literate player with at least a little intellegance can figure out how to double bind just from the name... if you go and say "I won't tell you how to double bind as it will reduce your need for reflexes" they will say "cool! i didn't know you could double bind keystrokes! lets go look through the player options and config file!"[/counter rant]
