complete noob, please give some proto-basic strategy advise

Post by elsolo »

I don't even know what I am suposed to do in team games. I understand regular box-em-in and kill them games, but not the team games. I tried playing capture the flag and such and I get voted off right away because I break etiquette rules I am unaware of because I don't yet know WTF I am supposed to be doing.

The flag seems to be the mall circle thingy, what do I do to get it and what do I do with it?
Apparently I am expected to do something specific in the very begining of (lets say a 3x3) game, otherwise I'll kill a teamate that is trying to execute some strategy I am ignorant of. What should be my default strategy if I am on the far left, middle or far right in a team game? I thought I would be able to figure this out on the fly but I keep irritating other players so quickly due to my complete ignorance so I get no gametime.

Other than kill people on the other team, what is expected?

Sorry that I have no clue, it's not like the game came with a manual.

Since I don't play CTF all that often i wont give you any specific tricks or pointers, but I will take a few mins to point you toward the wiki. Up in the top middle the cluster of words up there, in the bottom right, click on the wiki button. Or just click here: http://wiki.armagetronad.net/index.php/ ... e_the_Flag
It's not the most complete guide to arma, but it will answer most of your basic questions.

There is a thread for ctf tacticshttp://forums.armagetronad.net/viewtopi ... hlight=ctf but this is more for advanced tactics. What you are probably getting voted off for is non grinding or non splitting. This is similar to fortress...you need to grind the center player for speed at the start but split off in time for the other players to do the same without dieing. As for the rest you can pick up from the link, most people who play ctf don't even get the subtitles of the the game and will call SPAWN at totally the wrong time.

Dont worry about the voting...they were all new once, they just dont want to admit to it.

Hehe, once you know that you have to grind in the beginning of fortress, it all falls into place. Depending on your position in the beginning, you have to know where to break off though. The closer you are to the center man, the later you have to break off. And always remember to break off to your side.

IIRC, on one of the fortress servers, there is a shuffle out option so if you get too close to being center or you are center and don't know what to do (in which case, I can't really tell you much about being center since you'll know by watching), just shuffle out or rejoin server.

And when you start grinding in the beginning, make sure you do it 'tight' (like, when you go into the center wall stay there for an extra split second) so no guy can rush straight down the middle into your base.

from my experience, dont worry about it. train in local games and follow your instinct and you should be good.
