New tournament coming soon!
I am working to organize an Armagetron tournament. Some preliminary details:
- Cash prizes
- Non-team play
- Winner placement based on the Glicko-2 rating system
- Local servers for both US and Europe (and possibly Austrailia, depending on player turn out)
- Approximately one month long tournament
- Minimum of about 10 hours on the grid required
- Must face every other player at some point
Please feel free to ask questions or make suggestions here.

The servers would probably alternate between a variety of non-team game modes based on kills. So that means things like Classic or Deathmatch, but not modes like Fortress, CTF, or Race.EagleEye wrote:what style of server would it be in?
There will be specific time constraints to ensure completion. Probably a maximum of 50 hours gametime.DDMJ wrote:Unless everything is planned in one day, the tournament will be never-ending such as the 1st Sumo Tournament, the CT Dogfight Tournament, and each of Q-Brain's 3 Tournaments...

How is this going to be enforced? If two players don't meet, who is guilty and disqualified? What about Europeans only playing the European servers and Americans only playing the American servers, or time zone conflicts of interest?Luke-Jr wrote:- Must face every other player at some point
I'd fix certain event dates. Let players play when they want, but if they're not online on server X at time Y to Y, it's their fault if they don't meet everyone.
Is Glicko-2 robust against cheating? Can you improve your score by playing more against opponents you are winning against?
Cash prizes mean there's also an entry fee, right?

The tournament will not end until it occurs, but you are not disqualified if the maximum time is met without it happening. Players may be required to spend 3 game hours on each of the servers.z-man wrote:How is this going to be enforced? If two players don't meet, who is guilty and disqualified? That may work as well.z-man wrote:I'd fix certain event dates. Let players play when they want, but if they're not online on server X at time Y to Y, it's their fault if they don't meet everyone.
Glicko-2 aims to measure real skill. It doesn't care how many kills you get, but rather who you can kill. I think...z-man wrote:Is Glicko-2 robust against cheating? Can you improve your score by playing more against opponents you are winning against?
There are tiered entry fees. For example, you can play with a $0 entry fee (gratis), but you will only get about 5% of what a player paying a $25 entry fee would in the same position.z-man wrote:Cash prizes mean there's also an entry fee, right?

Even the old ladder did, although it worked (mostly?) with round wins.Luke-Jr wrote:Glicko-2 aims to measure real skill. It doesn't care how many kills you get, but rather who you can kill. I think...

Rounds don't have a clear who-you-killed...Jonathan wrote:Even the old ladder did, although it worked (mostly?) with round wins.Luke-Jr wrote:Glicko-2 aims to measure real skill. It doesn't care how many kills you get, but rather who you can kill. I think...
Well, the prizes aren't going to be awarded to a team, only to players, so their "team" will break down at some point. If they can kill all the other players, they probably deserve to be in the top x positions.z-man wrote:Hmm, will the games be one on one? If not, you can get a problem with informal teams. Me and a buddy could sign up, kill each other once or as many times as your rules require, then go on and cooperate to hunt down other players. The bigger the group, the better for them.
Me and my buddy agreed beforehand that we will share the prices we get. We'll work together to get the maximal sum of prices. If, near the end, we're rated second and third and the first place gives more money than that, one of us will pwn the other with his consent every round to push himself to first place. We'll probably even plan for this beforehand and only the one who is going to be pushed up later will pay an entry fee. Yeah, it's not skillless, you still have do do the kills, but the bigger your group, the easier it gets. Of course, profit also gets smaller, so big alliances will break up later, but secret alliances will be part of the game. Every game with more than two players has this property. Ignore this at your own risk.

How would that push you to first place? You'd need to pwn the guy who's ahead of you!z-man wrote:Me and my buddy agreed beforehand that we will share the prices we get. I don't think it will be a problem.... but I plan to have some trial stuffz-man wrote:We'll probably even plan for this beforehand and only the one who is going to be pushed up later will pay an entry fee. Sure you grok the Glicko-2 system? It's fairly complicated and I admit that I don't understand it. But if it is anything like elo, you also gain points by winning against players that are rated weaker than you, albeit not as much.Luke-Jr wrote:How would that push you to first place? Like I said, I have no clue how it worksz-man wrote:Sure you grok the Glicko-2 system? It's fairly complicated and I admit that I don't understand it. But it is well-tested...
