thanks for the cool reply, n54. here comes a semi-rebuttal:

> and btw no a lot of american slang is not afroamerican in origin

i guess i was referring to current spoken slang. words, mannerisms and ways of approaching things in conversations and interactions are very heavily dominated by afroamerican subculture, at least in the big cities and surrounding suburbs. it seems to have been picked up by the teen-tweener generations and spread to almost every age group. you can even see commercials all the time now with some grandmother shouting "fa shizzle, ma nizzle, biotch" or something of the sort. it's everywhere. i think people take to it so readily because it's refreshingly irreverant, like a way to downplay the serious pressures and demands of civilised american life. altho as you can guess i've become sick and tired of hearing it all the time, especially when people take it too far... yep, that's a BIG problem!

> rtfm, teotwawki, iwteotwawkiaa. roflwaguma, bib, yasd, yaad, wb

i have no idea what those mean and i almost don't want to know. americans can barely spell these days; maybe this makes it easier for them since they don't have to...

> l33t5p34|<: \/\/|-|!C|-| C4|\| b3 \/\/R!++3|\| !|\| |\/|4|\|y D!ff3R3|\|+ \/\/4y5 D3P3|\|D!|\|8 0|\| y0uR !|\/|48!|\|4+!0|\|

i can't read that crap, either. suffice it to say this stuff may work in the electronic medium but nobody tries to speak it out loud. then again, electronic interaction is pushing out face-to-face interaction everywhere.

ok i'm not american so i guess i escape most of it except for on tv (wouldn't mind norway joining the us/nafta instead of the eu though, but i'm not going to get political - you would all hate me lol  )

anyway
- i got tired of abusive language before it ever got popular (like biotch etc.) afaik (as far as i know) only total <censored> think that is cool
- misspelling stuff like bbl (be back later), rtm (read the manual - the polite version of rtfm) and so on is really bad as absolutely nobody would understand you
- l33tsp34|< (elite-speak) is absolutely not a spoken language - agreed :D but as to the other stuff i have on occasion caught myself saying "lol" loud instead of laughing :o (jeez i must be a complete nerd lol). anyway the abbreviations can be spoken (and are) :D

disclaimer: this was not a rebuttal

edit: just wanted to mention this is happening in all cultures, for example in norway and sweden some young ppl like to mix norwegian/swedish, pakistani and english (i'm not young so i don't know much about it)

hehehe... Doesn't rtfm stand for read that fine manual? Or was it read the final manual? Maybe rent teachers for muffins? Could it be really tall farting monsters? Possibly red tailgates talking mad? Perhaps real tron fans mourn (the apparently continual death anouncements of goshdarn)? You just don't know what it really means...

(Just like lol- lounging outside louieville  It's in Kentucky)

hehe, tank, n54...

anyway the abbreviations can be spoken (and are)

i think when i finally hear someone in real life talking netspeak outloud i am going to pull a louis black and jam a pencil in my eye. that will be final confirmation for me that the human race is about to go extinct or the sun is about to go nova, take yer pick...

i'd love to hear some of that norwegian/swedish slang spoken, BTW.

lol Tank + *takes care not to meet nicolas in rl (real life)* and pencils are strictly for writing (and maybe a few other things like makiing improvised slingshots with rubberbands)

when i was studying/teaching networking and similar we talked a lot in abbreviations, the *nix-guys were the worst lol  there's a lot of this in the military as well, most geeks/nerds have adopted snafu and foobar a long time ago *tries to make list of places nicolas should avoid* j/k :D

some of this stuff isn't that new, examples: asap (as soon as possible) and rsvp (répondez s'il vous plaît) <-- really old one

RSVP = respond please or i will feel like you don't care about my event
LMAO = laughing at the dead corpse of mao tse-tung because he was such an evil guy

N54, those examples you mention are harmless. i mean, actually they are quite provably useful. what will bother me is if something like 'leet-speak' abbreviations becomes de rigeur in this society. actually, it looks like i will be moving to peru in a few months so i doubt this will be a problem. if anything i will have to learn ancient indian dialects, heh.

Actually... I think it is... The "chinks" were the chinese sometime when they were under communist rule, I mean, the really bad communist rule. We got "Joe Chink" out of it, I think Or maybe I am confusing this all with a book I read once...

AHEM!.... lol, Mao is going to core dump you on the grid someday and make you regret that....

BTW the official assessment indicates he's 70% right, 30% wrong, so I guess to some of you crazy western people that 30% really hit hard...

as far as this "chink" business goes, it doesn't bug me at all, but hey, we're communist and proud of it ("chink"+"pinko"="chinko"? weird) However I assure you there are many other Chinese who would take offense at that...
I like rice. And all other kinds of Chinese food.

ur thinking of "pachinko", old dime arcade game, basically a Chinese vertical pinball machine, kind of like the game on Price is Right where they drop discs down an angled slide and they hit random posts, evetnually ending up in a certain slot at bottom. Used to play it a lot...
