This may be one of the "spectre" type bugs, there have been several reports of similar things haunting other people, only I myself have never seen it. A remedy may be to delete the file frommaster.srv in the var directory.
What version are you using? If it is one of the 0.2.8 beta versions, I'd be strongly interested in a recording of this phenomenon. For beta3 and beta4, there is a start menu entry that allows you to create one. Start the game with it, select "Internet Game", wait for the list to stabilize, then slowly scroll down and exit when you're done. The recording will be a new file on your desktop, please zip it up and attach it here.
The var directory would then be accessible via the "user data directory" start menu entry.
If you version is 0.2.7.1 or earlier, the var directory is inside the progam installation folder. In that case, we could use a copy of frommaster.srv before you delete it.
Sorry that this is less of a "let me help you" and more of a "can't help you, but here is how you can help us" post...

It was probably my mistake. I moved the master server from one machine to another, but forgot to migrate the server list. The old master kept running and eventually transmitted the list automatically, but that took a while. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Screenshots would be entirely useless, I'm afraid.
I'd need the recording thing. A recording alone can capture the internal state of the program and the network flow.
