Japanese!

What do you want to see in Armagetron soon? Any new feature ideas? Let's ponder these ground breaking ideas...

Japanese!

I'm hoping that you can add Japanese to the game, so you can type in japanese you know. I'm not forcing you to add "Kanji" because there are riduculously many of those, but I think Hiragana and Katakana would be cool to add. What do you think about it?
Random argument: If a japanese player starts playing Armagetron and can't communicate through normal letters, wouldn't this be superuseful?

It is possible to input any character in the development branch, but you need a custom font to render it.

But isn't that just client-sided? Like, no-one else can see it except you.

hm...a letter is a easy picture of informations given from the computer, isn`t it? So, normally it shouldn´t be very difficult to include japanese or chinese or sth like that.

well you need to find someone who's willing to translate it all (english to japanese and then find the respective letters in your custom font). and yeah Epsy said it is client-sided but communication works that way if everyone taking part in the japanese conversation has that font installed. but then you probably can't understand any other language (except if you memorized the letters you replaced and can somehow decrypt it back).

As long as the server is compatible (development branch again) and the other interested parties have fonts with support for japanese characters, it will work in a multiplayer environment.

Also, I am not talking about replacing latin characters in the font with others. There is full unicode support on trunk, but the default font, for the most part, only has western characters.

I'll clarify that this is because it is our own font, someone (Lucifer maybe?) took the original PNG font file and did some magic to make it TTF. If we want matching *ana characters someone will need to design them and add them to the font. In addition to translating the game. The easy solution is of course, for people who want these characters, to switch to their own font. (All of this presupposes the development branch.)

Well, if we were to just add hiragana (simplest alphabet basically), then the translation isn't hard at all: In windows, if you add Japanese by Microsoft IME, you just use romaji to input hiragana.
so
a = あ
i = い
u = う
e = え
o = お
ka = か
ki = き
ku = く
ke = け
ko = こ
etc....

There's only 48, so I can translate the rest if needed be. Or someone can google ;). I don't know anything about the font issue, though.

Yao, apple you forgot the alternate versions or whatever, pa, ba, ga, za, ji, ju.. and more ofc.
