What do you want to see in Armagetron soon? Any new feature ideas? Let's ponder these ground breaking ideas...

Content competition for 0.4: it's on!

Post by Z-Man »

The 0.4 release is nearing and it's time to see whether we can come up with a new set of clothes for it.

Important rules first:
-All textures need to have powers of two (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048. Nothing bigger) as width and height. They don't need to be square, though.
- If you feel the texture size restrictions are too narrow, feel free to also submit a high res pack without limits. The main submission needs to stick to the limits, though, and that's what it'll be judged by.
- A submission consists of the relevant files you want changed in a single category. You nominate your submission by posting here.
- For work in progress submission, feel free to make a new thread per project in a relevant subforum. (Graphical resp. Auditory). Make sure your first post always contains your most recent work so people can check it out quickly.
- What we end up putting into 0.4 will be determined by vote for each category. How the voting will go depends on how many and what kind of submissions we get; say someone thinks it's a good idea to submit a close copy of an already existing submission to split the votes and give his real submission better chances, we'd then pick a voting scheme that makes that ineffective or backfire.
- Multiple submissions by the same person are perfectly fine, as long as you don't spam (and why would you?)
- Obviously, we can only allow submissions where we actually have the right to include the contents. So no inclusion of copyrighted or trademarked things unless you own them (and give us permission). Content that imitates copyrighted material is all right.
-The one making the submission does not have to be the author of all the contained assets, but if not, proper credit needs to be given.
- The moviepack and moviesounds subdirectories are taboo. If your content needs to go there to work, it can't be accepted.
- Ideally, you submit 'source' versions of assets; for example, it's nice to be able to change any version in the title screen afterwards without your help. The source versions don't count towards the data size limits.
- Files you don't include in your submission will be filled in with the versions we now have in the experimental builds.
- Submission deadline: July 1st, 2012. May be extended depending on how much we slack off with the coding, but don't count on it.

There are four categories for your submission:
1. Cockpit. Your .cockpit.xml and associated textures. Total arbitrarily selected maximal number of pixels in the textures: 2^20 (one megapixel). Submission form: either the relevant files or, more conveniently, you host the cockpit file and textures somewhere and just give out the COCKPIT_FILE setting.
2. Sound.
Everything that is in the sounds/ directory is up for change. Submission form: the archived files. Total size limit: 1 MB compressed. Since the sounds are supposed to be all really short, you should get by with a lot less (we don't need a three hour motor sound loop).
3. Music. Everything in the music/ directory. Submission form: the archived files. Size limit 4 MB compressed.
4. Graphics. This is the big one, not limited to a single directory. All content files not covered by the other categories are in this one. This includes:
- cycle model. Can be in .mod format or .ase moviepack style format (yeah, moviepack style cycles work if you delete the included .mod files and move the .ase file into models/ and the textures into textures/). Polygon budget: 10k. Since they're referred to as cycles everywhere, make them resemble cycles. No speedboats or ponies.
- cycle textures. Special size limit here: 256x256. The textures are replicated for each player and need to be in video memory at all times, bigger textures would make problems on low end GPUs.
- cycle trail textures (dir_wall.png), rim wall textures (rim_wall.png, not the moviepack 4-split), sky (sky.png, upper_sky.png, yeah, that one is new), floor (floor*.png, needs to work with dual textured plane rendering, doesn't need to look exactly the same in the two rendering modes), title screen (Suggested dimension: 2048x1024), icons. 2048x2048 size limit for all of those, they're loaded only once and can be downscaled automatically.
- config/settings_visual.cfg and textures/settings_textures.cfg for visual tweaks. Don't put new settings in there, though, just modify what's there.
- The font textures/Armagetronad.ttf.
- Anything else I have forgotten that solely influences the look of the game.
- Size limit: 3 MB compressed.

Procrastinated a bit on that, sorry.
Discussion happened over there: http://forums3.armagetronad.net/viewtop ... =2&t=22078
And it should stay there; try to keep this thread for submissions only. Questions about the rules, complaints about the rules, pointing out errors in the rules: all goes into the other thread. Of course, if there is something seriously wrong with a submission (i.e. it doesn't work at all), point it out here.
If you have assets to share, do so here for graphics/cockpit and here for sounds/music.
And dammit, looks like I can stickify nothing :(
