ArmageTRON: Legacy - more than a moviepack!

I cobbled up ArmageTRON: Legacy. The cycles are from the Armagetron Movie Pack thread, the trails are from the ARMAGETRON TRON LEGACY thread, and the walls and floor are original.

However, the big part isn't the graphics at all. I upgraded the AI (no April Fools here) to make them MUCH more smart, and I changed them to TRON Legacy names.

It is a modified installer, since doing a manual installation would be too complicated. In Linux just install Wine (Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install wine / Debian: su -c "apt-get install wine" / Fedora: su -c "yum install wine") and run the installer. Armagetron is very Wine-friendly.

Haha, this is the definition of "hack"! I know close to nothing about C++, so I simply hacked config files and textures. armagetronad.exe is completely untouched.

You can guess how I improved the AI...aiplayers.cfg and settings.cfg

Armagetron was designed to have dumb AI for newbies: simply a line "AI_IQ 9999999" and a modified aiplayers.cfg can make the AI very, VERY smart.

Okay, so we have:
- First post.
- The knowledge that there's probably someone malicious around.
- Armagetron or anything like it wouldn't need an installer because it's "too complicated". Note how quantum claims it's merely the game packaged with different config files and textures, contradicting himself. Maybe it's in his interest that you run the installer, so that he can additionally install a keylogger or the like.

OK, since you are getting suspicious, here is the manual installation.

First, get the moviepack part.

Delete your old models and textures folders and replace it with the ones in the archive.

Then, open the aiplayers.cfg in the /config/ folder. Replace everything in it with:

The installer is only for newbies. Most newbies can't even find the Armagetron installation folder, not to mention aiplayers.cfg and the sort.

whatever you do, you DON'T delete all your textures and cycles. create a moviepack folder instead.
and changing a few console commands doesn't qualify as improvement of the entire game...

You do not seem to realize how much config files can change everything...

BTW, I know about the moviepack folder. However this will not break multiplayer or anything so I don't think that is necessary. I admit that I am a newbie to multiplayer though. I spend most of my time hacking config files, commands, and playing with AI.

Once again, you're not hacking anything. You just configure the game. That's what the console commands are supposed to do. Here's a full list.
Of course deleting the default textures and cycles doesn't break multiplayer but big moviepacks with over-detailed models tend to affect the FPS and loading times negatively (which is important to most players, that's why we don't use these moviepacks in tournaments). If you want to get them back once you deleted them, you need to reinstall the entire game unless you find them somewhere here or made a backup.

Hacking = adding new functions to the source code.

BTW there are a couple of servers with settings different from the default ones.

Thanks for making it available in this form. I would still be careful with that installer though.

hacking = changing the function of a program using very unorthodox ways.

For example, changing the config for lighttpd wouldn't be hacking. However, chaining it with stunnel and using an interface to dynamically change an HTML document and sending a refresh meta tag with it, and using a client based on Mozilla Gecko on the other end to receive it to create an interactive whiteboard IS HACKING. (I actually pulled that off before!)

wow dude no installers... few of us don't know our way around the armagetron folder. Linux is fine since no viruses but the windows users here are like paranoid schizophrenic over installers. This doesn't constitute as a hack you just changed some of your configurations wow :roll: . Real hacks are tweaks in the code.

But it does work! The AIs really get smart, especially if you set wall length to ~200m

I really don't think you did very much here. Far from necessary is the installer. You should scrap that and just tell us what you changed and the specific files i.e.: settings.cfg that you changed any "newbsauce" can ask questions here, that is after all one of the purposes of this forum. As far as the graphics go don't worry about it I have a few useful legacylike texture files "moviepacks" here: http://forums3.armagetronad.net/viewtop ... 47&t=21373 (just change the directory name from textures to moviepack if you don't like the idea of a texture file[though it is like a million times easier])

configuring your server/local game isn't hacking/cheating/some deep, unorthodox 1337 skill...
(you'll find a lot of servers where ai_iq is set to something high).
there wouldn't be such a big variety of servers (even if some settings like fortress are the most popular ones) if there was no possibility to change the settings. AI_IQ is just one small part of it.
Also, you didn't hack it by your own definition (sound effect!). You didn't change a function, you used an already existing function to change the AI's IQ.

could I have a build with AI_IQ 99999999? I find that 9999999 is still too easy. thanks!
