ISP or Me?

Post by INW »

I am wondering if you guys think this horrible ping activity is my ISP or me (maybe a faulty cable or something).

This is tested to G5's server IP with a cable router (no wifi or wireless). Ping is just as bad to google.com when pinging from cmd. Getting roughly 500 ping every time.

Where should I do a trace route to?

I just did it to google.com and got:

Code: Select all

Tracing route to google.com [74.125.115.99]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms CISCO03326 [192.168.1.1]
  2 1029 ms 821 ms 736 ms cpe-174-099-024-001.nc.res.rr.com [174.99.24.1]
  3 1043 ms 939 ms 805 ms a-rtr1-10gig0-2-0-1.1121.nc.rr.com [66.26.46.85]
  4 648 ms 735 ms 767 ms ae19.rlghncpop-rtr1.southeast.rr.com [24.93.64.0]
  5 576 ms 818 ms 728 ms ae-3-0.cr0.dca10.tbone.rr.com [66.109.6.80]
  6 183 ms 66 ms 112 ms ae-2-0.pr0.dca10.tbone.rr.com [66.109.6.169]
  7 19 ms 20 ms 21 ms 66.109.9.66
  8 44 ms 22 ms 21 ms 216.239.48.112
  9 436 ms 140 ms 47 ms 209.85.243.114
 10 80 ms 31 ms 31 ms 64.233.174.117
 11 339 ms 50 ms 35 ms 209.85.253.181
 12 632 ms 523 ms 34 ms vx-in-f99.1e100.net [74.125.115.99]

Trace complete.
nc(.res).rr.com is my ISP I do believe.

Here is another I just did:

  9 415 ms 498 ms 362 ms 209.85.248.75
 10 * 59 ms 46 ms 209.85.254.239

 12 243 ms 196 ms 29 ms qw-in-f104.1e100.net [74.125.93.104]

Does the asterisk represent an error?

It's your ISP. Time Warner right? I have the same problems with them. My connection is practically useless for online play.

Time Warner puts a Switch in a given neighborhood. At first, when not to many people are using it, no problem. But, when a bunch of people start getting the internet, it sucks.

Hurrah for contention ratio issues. (First guess as to what it could be, and nothing you can do about it really if it is.) The * means there was a timeout, so either the packets were lost or they just took too long.
