iPad 2

Post by Thump »

Just curious... how impossible would it be to create an Armagetron app for iPad 2? According to its 1ghz processor and seeing the gaming capabilities it has, im certain the Tron would be very playable with it. there are versions for all platforms as it is. Any thoughts? cuz.. it would pwn.

Technically possible. Voodoo had a proof of concept version running on an iPhone, but due to our graphics pipeline being hardcoded to regular OpenGL, performance wasn't great.
Legally, though, it'd only be possible to distribute it to jailbroken devices and not over the Apple store. The official distribution method is not considered GPL compatible by a lot of people.

That you need permission from ALL source code contributors to put apps there. Including the third party libraries you link with if I'm not mistaken.

Prove me wrong but I don't think that's apple's fault, is it?

It's Apple's fault for closing things down so badly. Either that, or Stallman is the evil guy.

I hate that I kinda like the Apple way otherwise. :(

My first try was on an iphone 3G and I've just converted immediate opengl code (glbegin/glend) to vertex array. FPS was pretty bad (<15 with only 4 cycles) and even worth for online game.

It might worth starting another try, especially considering that gles 2.0 is now compatible with gl 4.1.
But that still means rewriting the whole graphic part. The good thing is that it means replacing immediate gl calls (deprecated since gl 3.x anyway) by vbo and adding shader supports as gles2 does not support old fix pipeline way. that's plenty of work.

Is there some plan about the graphic part ?

Yes, "Patches Welcome" :) My only requirement for the next graphics pipeline would be that it should be customizable, no hardcoded textures, but some material system. Result wise, I always wanted to port to Ogre, but that adds dependencies and limits our target platforms.
