Cannot Load Armagetron

Hello all,

I recently installed Windows 7 (fresh install) and I can no longer run Armagetron AD on my computer. It was running Windows Vista before and it ran very well.

My computer is an Acer Aspire, with a quad-core AMD processor. I have an ATI Radeon HD 4670 card installed.

Mostly it just goes to a black screen and quits to desktop but I occasionally get the message:

Error in bool sr_InitDisplay() in src\render\rScreen.cpp:824:

Sorry, played all my cards trying to initialize your video system.
Armagetron Advanced won't run on your computer. Reason:

Unknown

I'll try again from the beginning but the chances of success are minimal.

This is really dissapointing as I really love this game. I am running the latest ATI driver, only a month old. I have tried the latest version of the game and the next newest stable version, similar results. I have tried every combination I can think of for 'compatability mode'. Can anyone help?

The error message means your graphics driver is somehow inadequate. Maybe it is broken, or doesn't support OpenGL at all, which we need. In the past, cases have been known where drivers distributed by Microsoft had OpenGL support stripped; only get your drivers from ATI themselves. Also, disabling fancy desktop effects (Aero) may help.

Hmm. I'm still getting used to the way drivers work with Vista and 7. I downloaded the file straight from ATI and installed it, it appeared to go properly but who knows. The device window says the right version number and that it is by ATI.. I'll try again just in case.

The driver does have some microsoft specific info beside it, and there's another I can choose that disables the Aero effects for some reason.. I'll try them both and see, and also manually disable Aero and see what happens.

Thanks again for the tip - I fixed the problem, mostly.

Apparently the EXE from ATI was not actually installing the driver, just unpacking it. I told windows to install from the c:\ATI directory and it worked fine. Now I am able to have AERO effects and also run Armagetron AD simultaneously with no problems.

Well, sort of no problems. For whatever reason when I'm using this driver, my original onboard video card (a Radeon 3200) stops working because 'problems were reported'. With the original display driver (from Microsoft) both displays were working fine.

But since I don't have a second monitor, (let alone 4) I'm not particularly worried about it. I've disabled the original card and am back playing Tron.

Yup, a minor irratance but easilly fixed.

On a related note, I am finding that the performance of other games such as Mass Effect are now *greatly* improved, so this situation is a win.

Hi, I'm getting this exact error message with my game right now and I'm not sure how to fix it..kind of a noob with my files and what not, can anyone help me with what to do to fix this?

Never mind, apparently my game has decided to randomly start working again :S
