Armagetron on a USB drive
Ok, I was just curious if anybody would know if it would work.
You see, I have a speech in communications class Monday where I have to show people how to do something with a visual aid. There is a computer available for use, and a screen projecter. I was thinking of showing people how to play Armagetron, but I can't download it to the computer as it is school property. If I could get it on a USB drive and play it on the computer, I could do it. I have until Monday to try this crazy scheme.
I can and will test it before hand, but I just wanted to make sure if this idea is too crazy and the people who know Arma could officially tell me to just give it up.

Ok, but why did I add this signature? I was like 15 and thought I was smart? What a brat.

It should work just fine if you give the installer a path on the stick to install to. You probably want to store user data on the stick, too; for that, you need to pass the game the command line arguments "--userdatadir ." I think that is all. Google 'armagetroad portable', it brings up a couple of relevant hits.

Re: Armagetron on a USB drive
I don't know about PC's, but when my G3 iMac's screen went pfft, I had the geeks pull the drive, put a jumper on it, and got one of these powered USB/Firewire enclosures for it. So, at the moment it's acting as an external drive, and I've been able to launch and run AA and other stuff right off of it, no problem. I just double-click the app and there it runs. It did put the relevant support files in my "Application Support" folder on this computer, just as if I had launched from the computer's own drive (or it'll use the ones already there).
But maybe with PC's you actually have an actual install process?
I think you should just demonstrate how to use the screen projector as a visual aid.

Yeah...this kinda brings up a problem...
How is Arma going to get to the resource if there is none?
Hmm...This will be hard, and will take some time, but you could edit the source to make the resource "E:/resource" and the var "E:/var"...
This also depends on how big your flash drive is...So, how many gigabytes is it?

Pie, your lack of knowledge of Arma is really showing here. It comes with enough resources to play. Additional resources do not take up much space, and can easily be added, if Cosmic Dolphin wants to show something other than the standard grid. Said resources are relatively small text files.

Yea, I dont want all the fancy things like moviepacks or such, just enough to show how to change controls for your setup, color, name, local game and internet game. I would believe all of that would be on the most basic thing you can get.

Usually schools have a temp folder that students use and erases when it is shut down. Or you could do a video before hand for the presentation.

Re: Armagetron on a USB drive
Well, I got it to work on a computer without Armagetron loaded on the computer itself that has the same operating system as the ones at my school. I do believe it will work. Who knows, we might get a new arma player out of this lol.

Re: Armagetron on a USB drive
Just install it just like it is an extra hard disk (just make sure it's the right Operating System for the computers at school). You can, if needed, create a .cfg file(s) of all the settings you will need and put it in the config folder of the flash drive then use the command INCLUDE to load it.

Re: Armagetron on a USB drive
I am not allowed to download anything other than academic research materials to these computers. I could probably do that with Arma, under these circumstances, but it would take some arguing and I would have to delete it afterward. Since I was able to get it to work on USB device (I even tried it on the correct computer, it works), I can take it along wherever and play Arma now wherever I want to go.Tobe wrote:Just install it just like it is an extra hard disk (just make sure it's the right Operating System for the computers at school). Re: Armagetron on a USB drive
If for some reason you do end up having to install in on the computer, you might be screwed. At my old high school, all non-administrator accounts (including teachers) did not have permission to install anything.

Re: Armagetron on a USB drive
I did it on the USB drive, it worked and I got 22.5 out of 25 points on my speech.

Re: Armagetron on a USB drive
Dude, that was my first speech not perfect. And I got a perfect score in the mid-term there. I am holding a 4.0 in all classes.
