what are the triangle like things i see around some enemy light cycles?

It's nothing less than The Official Lag-O-Meter. It shows roughly where others can be already without you seeing due to network lag.

I Highly, suggest you don't use it. It gets extremely annoying..

I highly suggest you do use it since it's extremely helpful for knowing where your opponent is so you don't die "randomly" and be like "wtf, I was ahead"

...either that or use prediction (predict_objects 1)

The lagometer, imo, is essential. I always use it. Think of other players as being somewhere on the lagometer line, rather than where you see their cycle.
