Hex(?) post #'s

Post by Your_mom »

It seems adding the new sub forums has broken something. Topics, posts, replies, and views are all displaying as what appears to be some broken hex(or some such thing).

OT. Should the topic 0.2.8.3_beta1: Release process and bugs be moved from development to the sub forum beta testing?

Geeky! Keep!

Oh yeah, sorry, that thread is really in the wrong subforum. My bad. However, it's really more looking like a cram-some-last-features-into-it thread, so it's fine where it is.

Believe it or not, this isn't something broken. Staring at Psyko having 255 posts for ages and ages and keeping on thinking "ff" gave me a crazy idea. Since I was at maintenance when I created the new sub-forum, I did some other maintaining as well. I think I'll leave it like this for a little while.

At least until we all learn how to count in hex and forget about how to count in dec. As well as confusing Halloween and Christmas.

Hex is harmless. Try setting your calculator to output everything in base 9 while still treating input as base 10 (but without indicating that it does that) and lend it to someone. Have fun watching how long it takes for them to notice that the output is total rubbish and doesn't contain any nines.

I'm getting better, as amazing as it sounds. Maybe if I work numbers in hex instead of decimal, I can finally start remembering bigger numbers again. :)

Multiplying by 4096 then adding multiplied by 256 adding multiplied by 16 and adding again. While converting the individual digits rather has me going for a loop.

I'm aiming for intuitively knowing the value of the number, same way I recognize base 10 numbers. So all that crazy multiplying will just bog me down, I think. Something more bayesian in nature is better.... ;)

(Have been able to recognize f* for a long time, but what the hell is 8a? Maybe I'm really going to wind up learning it all by rote)

Intuitive arithmetic is even more fun. Like arriving at B0A+EBD=19C7 in a few seconds without resorting to writing things down or anything.
