Hi and welcome aboard!

Impressive. I notice you are from China. May I ask a question as part of an ongoing investigation?

As a child, I've been facinated by an idea that comes in many children stories in Canada, saying that if you where to start digging, and managed to dig trough the planet core, you would end up in China. But soon I've noticed that both Canada and China where on the northen hemisphere of the planet, and that you would have to cheat and dig at angle rather than straight trough. Looking at a globe, I've noticed that Australia was much more accurate, and even for that, you would need to cheat a bit. I mean it would be a big dissapointment to manage to dig trough the whole Earth to end up drowned in the pacific ocean because you mised one of the island.

But as I started to travel, I started to present this problem to people from other countries. Americains, Germans, French, Spains, Swedes, Norvegians, and an actual Australian. And somehow they where all claiming that according to children stories from THEIR countries, THEY would end up in China. I felt someone was hiding something.

So now, faced with this international conspiracy to claim the right to the story "if I dig trough the Earth, I'll end up in China", I started to ask some Asian (mostly Thay, Laosians, Vietnameses, but also Indians, Pakistans, Irakeses and Iraneses *) people if they ever heard about this story. To my surprise, none of them knew it. And that only strengtened my claim that aiming for the polynesians islands is too complex, and that most expeditions simply drowned in the ocean, and that you should really aim for a big land mass like Australia.

But now, I feel I can finally ask someone in the loop. YOU! Some expeditions trough our planet must have succeded. So, when you see the ground break, and a bunch of kids emerging from a bottomless tunnel, all dirty and sweaty, shovels in their hands, where do they claim they come from? When Chineses kids team up, grab a shovel and start to dig, where to they plan to end up?

Please help up lift the veil on this age long conspiracy.

-ph

* I know its stretching the notion of Asian, and should be more middle east, but those are the people I've met.

PS: Welcome to the forum. And dont worry, the other members of this forum are much more sane that I am.

A bit saner perhaps, but not much. Welcome!

Actually, we here in Germany get told that we'd end up in Australia or New Zeeland, which actually is both correct depending on the minimum size of the landmass you want to aim for. Some tiny islands ( The Antipodes, I guess ) will be closer, but a lot harder to hit.

I wore a fong when I dug through the earth and wound up on a desert island in the middle of the south pacific. While there, I became acquainted with the inhabitants. The skipper, Gilligan, Mary Anne, Ginger, the Professor, etc. Good people. I offered to bring them back through the tunnel to the US, but the professor didn't think that would be feasible. He said only kids could safely travel through that tunnel, and he remarked that he thought I should've ended up in China. When he asked why, I could only give him one answer.

I wear a fong.

I (Netherlands) have been told that you would end up in Australia when I was 7 or so. I actually looked it up on a globe and claimed it's not correct, and said that you would end up east from New Zeeland instead.

I started digging, and I got about 40 feet down. Then the hole filled up with water. We use that new well to this day.

Unless you can swim, you ain't getting far. And you gotta hold your breath a long time. Oh, and then you need a special heat resistant suit that can get through our molten core. I haven't figured out a solution to that one.

Welcome FonG

If you dig long enough you're more likely to end up in the planetwide web of tunnels used by the Tibetans  (if you don't get it: go read "Good Omens" by Prachett & Gaiman)

This also explains the whole "dig to China" thing as most Europeans are hopeless at seeing the difference between a Chinese face and a Tibetan face :D
