i just downloaded a version of the game for my friend
and he has a pc
windows xp
about 2.4Ghz processor
and he can only manage 4 or 5 fps with a local game

we reduced the various options
so that he is on a black grid
no effects at all
and he can just get to 20 fps

any idea why this is?
thanks

and

we tried to set up a wireless lan
and i wondered if i could set up a fortress setting with my client
or do i need to run a server dedicated version?
hold the line

Did he install the latest openGL drivers for his video card?

Sure, just press the console key (` for me here, the one below ESC) and enter 'include examples/cvs_test/fortress_complete.cfg'.

2020, what Video card has he got? I had a similar problem, but not to the extremes of 4 fps.

Unfortunately (now on a different PC) I'm also having similar problems, so I've ordered a new GPU but its not arriving till March >.<

Ricochet: single-digit FPS for no apparent reason usually means the GPU isn't used at all, and that the CPU is rendering everything. I.e. it doesn't matter what kind of GPU it is.

Edit: Yes, it matters when looking for drivers. It just doesn't matter for the framerate when it isn't used.

Not trying to be hopelessly pedantic or anything, but the GPU does matter, because if there are no openGL drivers for it, or it just lacks openGL support (as many onboard GPUs), then you get software rendering.

And yes, this symptom points right at software rendering as the culprit, so his buddy needs to get hardware 3d support from somewhere, either by installing the appropriate drivers if possible, or buying a new GPU that has the right drivers and good hardware support.

2020: maybe write down the graphics of the pc. e.g if he has got only an intel chip he wont reach very much more than that 20 fps...

Nonsense, Intel GPUs are the best currently available.

What happened to Arma? It used to play fine with software rendering. :/

Nowhere is stated that he didn't run at HD res. That's one of the most important factors when little fillrate is available. I used to run at 320x200 when I only had a software renderer, to get 15-30 FPS on a machine that must be antique by computer standards.

I've never gotten a software renderer over 10fps. I can get both of my computers to an acceptable 70fps, but the one in back is at 640x400, with floor and a few other things off. The one in front is at 1280x800 with all the bells and whistles turned on. :) (arma is a very nice game with all the shit turned on at a pretty high resolution)
