Dry Ice is Carbon Dioxide in a Solid form (Which will give you freeze burn you if you touch it), Due to the temperature, it subliminates fairly quick back to a gas.

Neat, how to get that? And at what temperature is CO2 solid? (Kelvin or Celcius please)

i guess i'll list the times i've almost accidently offed myself, in chronilogical order from birth & other stupid human tricks..

poor joe!

btw, osci my son has the same scar, but he got his by waking up upsidedown in a seatbelt in a rolled church van which had already been evacuated by all the other passengers, he woke up & kicked a window out & crawled thru it. (there were doors open) :)

ok here goes..

age 6
drove bicycle in front of neighbors teenaged son driving musclecar down street just to see if he'd stop *shrugs*

age7
hanging upside down by 2nd story neighbors porch railing by my feet, railing screws gave way, hands barely made it to railing b4 feet slipped, concrete slab 12' below head...

that winter sister asked me to lick metal pole in back yard, did, didnt wait for warm water, lost many a taste bud

age 12
this ones not my fault, but still kinda funny, we moved to texas, i think the moving crew started to remove my front wheel of my bicycle, but the threads were stripped & they couldnt figger out the locking washers or sth.. anywho.. drove my bike for about a week, b4 i went off this one curb & watched the front wheel bounce & leave teh forks without throwing the bike between my legs.. forks hit pavement, jaw & back of hands hit pavement next, broke my left wrist & gave my jaw a nice cartilige problem to live with.. not too bad.. but still

age 14
was at a sleep-over with youth group at soem rich ppl from church's house.. um.. it was late.. they had a hot-tub that waterfalled into a pool, all of it stonework.. i was wandering aroudn thru their house at like 2 or 3 am.. giving myself a .. "ghetto high" (dont ask)
ended up blacking out & falling from 2nd story level into pool below,..
woke up on bottom of pool looking up at bubbles leaving me..
decided that was a bad place to be, surfaced, arms didnt work.. legs did, kicked myself to edge of pool, head OW!!! hands still dont work.. head OW!!! decide to not drown & make head stop hurting must make arms work.. soemhow convinced brain/arm receptors to work.. cough, puke,.. chlorine taste big eggs on top of head.. hehe

age 15-16
2 motorcycle wrecks, highway, on back of bike someoen else driving
fell off big 30' boulder backwards (preventable rappelling accident)

decided to get stoned durring rainstorm in a culvert tunnel.. fire dept threw me a rope later while i was standing on a tree barrier

hmm, i did many stupid things around this age, too many to list :)

age 17-present

i still do stupid things, mostly hurt myself things, mostly not life threatening anymore.

i have alot of hurt myself stories.. from bicycles mostly,.. on acount of i do stunts on them, or used to alot more.. knee injury at age 31 slowed me down a bit

I'm surprised not many know about dry ice. Seems like common knowledge here.

Liquid Nitrogen is also fun to play with.

you can get it at any store that sells ice for like parties & stuff.. or meat dressing places have it usually near hunting areas..

(in the states anyways)

not sure what temp it is, look it up on that newfangled internet thingy..

i belive its made with a compressor u compress the carbondioxide enuff, it turns froze? same way they make liquid nitrogen, too i belive, pressure?

sorry for the off-topic

we played with liquid nitrogen at linucon2 last weekend, but they were too skeered to let me freeze some shaving cream & open the can :(

they mostly made icecream with it

sorry sabrai, i use lots of "..." on forums. . cuz.. i think up stuff to say, so i start a post, but then,.. i cant type as fast as i can think.. so.. the ... reflect my.. absent mindedness?

?? That's not what i implicated, (...) means skip the stuff inbetween, you can read that yourself, in here :P

Nothing to turn up the pressure in my school's lab :(

the most probably reasons for my not knowing about dry ice are that I've only had chemistry for 3 weeks, and that it's an english term that probably isn't too common around here.
But I bet it's near impossible (at least for me) to get my hands on stuff like dry ice or liquid nitrogen. We've been wanting to build a bomb or something for ages... we had plans with sulfur acid and gunpowder (or something like that, I'm not the bomb expert), but it's kinda difficult to get with 14 or 15 ...
ammonia and alcohol could be easier.

My chemics teachers once tought us how do build a TNT bar >< After we asked what we could get on our school it was only half of the stuff needed.. Bummer.. :( But i think if you just do some searching you'll find heavy explosive stuff with normal things.

You can get dry ice as easy as store bought ice. and it is usually fairly cheap.

Carbon Dioxide freezes at -78.5 degrees Celcius.

I seriously dont know how you people miss these kinds things, have none of you ever been by a fog machine?

Transporting is a pain in the ass, keep it in a cooler (MAKE SURE ITS NOT AIR TIGHT OR PICTURE WHAT HAPPENED TO MY HAND TIMES TEN!) You will lose all of the dry ice in about 24 hours give or take.

You must also be extremly cautious handeling it. It will in fact burn the skin it comes in contact with so wear some gloves. It doesnt turn into a liquid since it sublimes fairly quickly (Subliminiation: When a solid skips the liquid stage and goes directly to gas) I've known about dry ice since I was like 5 and play with it whenever chance possible. You can do alot of fun stuff with it. drop some chuncks of it into a balloon and tie it. Throw it in a pool, watchit raise from the pool and POW! Drop it in hot water and watch it smoke(A Fog Machine) and becareful not to breath it in, Carbon Dioxide is MUCH MUCH heavier than oxygen so it will stay in your lungs a lot longer.

It's just not really a common household item.

EDIT Paintballers! If you use a co2 tank to propell your paintballs and use it fairly quickly, notice how cold the tank is, if you shake it around you will hear clanking around in the tank, Congratulations you made your own dry ice!

Fog machines aren't fueled by dry ice. Although it's still used for special affects. Since cold air sinks, it's used to cover floors in movies and theatre.

Wikipedia wrote:Liquid nitrogen is produced industrially in large quantities by distillation from liquid air and is often referred to by the quasi-formula LN2. It is a cryogenic (extremely cold) fluid which can cause instant frostbite on direct contact with living tissue (skin). When appropriately insulated from ambient heat it serves as a compact and readily transported source of nitrogen gas without pressurization. Further, its ability to maintain an unearthly temperature as it evaporates (77 K, minus 196 deg.C or minus 320 deg.F!) makes it extremely useful in a wide range of applications as an open-cycle refrigerant, including;

the immersion freezing and transportation of food products
the preservation of bodies, reproductive cells (sperm and egg), and biological samples and materials
in the study of cryogenics
for demonstrations in science education
in dermatology for removing unsightly or potentially malignant skin lesions,e.g., warts, actinic keratosis, etc.

I can't believe Tree never heard about Trockeneis... Although I'm pretty sure you can't just buy it in a shop around here. But I may be wrong, I never saw normal water ice in a shop either. Maybe I don't go to the right shops.
If you're not just interested in building bombs, you could ask your parents for a chemistry kit. It's educational if used right (that means, if you follow the instructions), and later, once you understand what a mol is, you'll be able to devise your own gunpowder formula. Beware, a friend managed to ignite a self built magnesium bomb in his hand and severely burned it. There are lots of ways to do stupid things with a chemistry kit.

Small nitpic: CO2 does turn liquid at higher pressures. What I liked to do when I worked at a biological lab during my civil service is this: We got lots of deliveries packed in styrofoam boxes filled with small pellets of dry ice. There are these small test tubes called "Eppendorfs" (after the main manufacturing company and probably the inventor; you see them every time there is a news report about any biological discovery, people carry them around in hundreds and you see them or a robot arm add something to the contents with a pipette; it's a "well known secret" that whatever you see the researchers do with them has nothing to do at all with the actuall discovery, it's just a generic activity. But I digress...). They have a cap attached that closes pretty tightly. Sooo, what you do is put a dry ice pellets into them, close the cap and put the eppendorf cap down on the table and wait. Sooner or later, the pressure from the evaporating CO2 will force the cap open and propell the eppendorf flying through the room. For a even better effect, hold the cap closed with your hands while you hold the tube upside down. The CO2 will turn liquid, and the small amount that evades through the cap will solidify and freeze the cap shut. Then it will stand a much higher pressure, and consequently the bang later will be much bigger (be sure to wear eye protection or get out of the way).
